Welcome to the 2024 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)

MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.
Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:
Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:
Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

Hi, not a newbie to AAdvantage or flying, but a newbie to this forum, so I'm posting to ask: Is there a specific forum that focuses on maximizing rewards via a combination of cards/travel bookings/related programs?

I tried to post the below on Reddit, but the AAdvantage board seems to be mostly abandoned as I'm not getting a response to my request to join from the administrators.

No need to answer my questions specifically if there's a place here where I can dig them up myself- thanks!

--------Currently Platinum, which I had to buy up to this year because of a light travel year last year. Would like to maintain Platinum "organically" going forward, ideally Platinum Pro.

Here's my current situation:
  1. Live in Madrid, Spain, work in the US. I need to make 4-6 trips to the US per year. On my last trip, I garnered about 25k loyalty points, so I think I'll see between 100k and 150k from trips (including card points from ticket purchases for those trips- see #2)
  2. I pay for my trips from Madrid->US East Coast - I buy those trips with my Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage card via the AA site.
  3. Company pays for trips from US East Coast -> final destination (usually west coast); I can't buy those tickets but I get the mileage credit.
  4. I am also Lifetime Platinum on Bonvoy and stay there for the points to be redeemed to hotels later, but that's not as important and banking points for flights.
  5. I could probably shift about $2500/month of "regular" spending to my Aadvantage card.
Question for the wisdom of the crowd:
  • Should I get a different / better / additional card?
  • Any way to direct my extra spend to AAdvantage me more?
  • Anything I should be doing with my Marriott loyalty points (transfer) or any other similar program?
Thanks for any ideas.

The AA forum here is really the place for the AA related questions. They are quite easy to be honest:

1) All AA credit cards earn only 1 LP per dollar spend, so in terms of earning LP for status they are all equal, getting another/different card will not help.

2) Putting $2,500/mo in additional spend on an AA card would generate another 30k LP, so if you earn 100k LP organically that could put you over the hump to PLT Pro. However there's always the opportunity cost of putting that spend on an AA card versus an Amex/Chase that offers better returns.

3) The Marriott forum can guide you on your Marriott questions.

If your goal is status, then your quest would be about earning Loyalty Points (LPs). Additional LPs can be earned through AA partners (aadvantegeeshopping, aadvantagehotels, aadvantagedining, simplymiles). Here are some related threads:
AAdvantageeshopping
AAdvantagehotels
SimplyMiles

If your goal is to maximize redeemable miles (which you get one of per LP, plus any category bonuses, i.e. 2x for restaurant spend on your current card), the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard provides a 10x bonus on hotel bookings through AAdvantegehotels.com, and also car rentals through AA. You also get 4X on American Airline ticket purchases, vs 2X on your current card. But it comes with a ~600USD annual fee. There is also Bask Bank, which offers a Mileage Savings account, but you need to evaluate the opportunity cost of earning miles vs. straight interest.

Don't forget the 10K Loyalty Points Executive MasterCard bonuses which accrue at 50K LP and again at 90K LP.

I have a non-stop direct from SEA-DFW that leaves approx 12:20AM on a Saturday. Will the '24 hour free change' allow me to confirm a flight on FRIDAY with space available (also non-stop direct) on FRIDAY that departs after 00:20? Unclear to me whether the 24 hour change would only apply to SATURDAY flights or also include flights that depart on Friday as well?

What "24 hour free change"?

AA tickets are fully refundable within the first 24 hours after booking as long as your departure date is more than two days in the future

Upgrade basic economy?

I'm trying to use an Amex $50 flight credit on my Amex Hilton Aspire, but would rather put as much as I can on my Citi AA card.

One thought I had was that I saw a $40 difference between basic and regular economy. Is one solution to buy the ticket on basic with my Citi card and then upgrade the ticket right after with the Aspire?

Still loving this forum!!

Building off of this question, is anybody aware of source on maximizing the AMEX airline credit when used with AA, beyond the standard published expenses? I have not had much luck lately outside of some of the smaller award fees because elite status makes most incidental fees go away. I know you can trickle it into United or Southwest travel funds but I'd really like to find a productive way to use it on AA.

There is a dedicated thread for that over in the Amex forum:

Platinum airline fee $200 reimbursement reports: AA only (2024)

I think they are asking about Same Day Confirmed change. In my experience the answer is no, you cannot SDFC to the previous day, even if the flight leaves at 12:20am.

Greenwich lounge at JFK on arrival?

I believe I can use the Greenwich lounge in JFK when connecting from first on AA RDU-JFK to business JL JFK-HND. But can anyone confirm if I can use it on arrival returning from HND-JFK business JL before our return in first on AA JFK-RDU? I'd like to use the showers as we currently have a 5 hour layover. Thank you.

Yes you'll have access to the Greenwich Lounge in each direction.

Contact Phone Numbers

I have an extremely dumb general question. When calling AA, which is rare to begin with, what is the difference between calling the Aadvantage Desk number vs Reservations or Flight Bookings? I feel like most questions would revolve around ticketing and such. Thanks!
