Is refundable to Europe really 100% refundable?
I see AA offers refundable fares. Are these really 100% refundable or is there a catch? When searching for flights you can check a box for refundable, so these are the fares I am talking about. I see they offer refundable flights to Europe. Where I live there are no direct flights to Europe, so this would start in USA, fly to another USA city and then fly to Europe from the connecting city. And when I search after selecting refundable, the results say " Please note connection time, Overnight flight or connection, The class of service you searched may not be available on one or more flights"
What does that mean? But if I go to check out, the final page says "refundable" on ticket purchase... I am still worried there is some type of "catch" and if I need to refund these tickets, I won't get a refund, or will end up with a partial refund due to all kinds of hidden fees and rules etc... Thoughts? |

look at the actual fare rules, save them, rely on those only |
AA many years ago quietly removed the REFUNDABLE online radio button and replaced it with FULLY FLEXIBLE online button and yes I have had penalty amounts in the past as high as $600 for a FULLY FLEXIBLE ticket refund.. So be careful or figure out how to read those fare rules. Almost no one but a few people on flyertalk have that skillset to understand the fare rules that are a hidden link on the very last online page . Good luck and be careful or call AA and have them verify and mark up your PNR with notes.

Just because the last segment is in different class does not mean the fare is not fully refundable. That has nothing to do with refundability. As long as the fare says "Cancellations Permitted" in the Penalties section of fare rules and there are no cancel fees listed in Penalties section, the fares are fully refundable with no fee for refund no matter what booking class you are getting on last hop. Just did a spot check on ex-US to EU refundable fares on EF (fare basis code will end in a 9) and none had a fee for refund. When you buy a roundtrip to EU from US, you are getting ex-US fare filings in both directions. Fully flexible fares are just refundable fares with no advance purchase requirements. There's no need to upfare to these if you just want the option to fully refund before flight.

Correct. The "Cancellations Permitted" text in the Penalties section as above is what indicates refundability and it's all you need to focus on. It's simply airline speak for refundable fares (all airlines use the "Cancellations Permited" wording). You won't actually find the words "Refundable" in the fare text. It is what it is.

Did AA.com make changes? I am 99% sure those options were not available when I booked flights. Yes those are Toggle /Radio buttons. Also AA.com has added Refundable to the select menu when you pick the search option page. And congratulations on finding the hidden fare rule link and able to read them. You are one of the few people on Flyertalk with this knowledge.
