I think the problem is:
* afternoon flights TIA-LHR aren't offered every day
* Many flights from LHR to US leave before the flights from TIA get to LHR
* The AA booking engine must have problems with the overnight connection
I actually flew TIA-LHR-AUS last year on a paid BA ticket, and I had to play around with the BA site just to allow a paid ticket.

Many thousands of people fly long-haul economy every day. It's perfectly reasonable to fly economy.
What if I told you I flew a transpac earlier this year in economy (JL - LAX-HND)? And several EU/US legs? I can assure you all of them were perfectly reasonable, even comfortable, flights.

Also JL has the most spacious economy class out there for their long haul flights. You have one less seat per row and a lot more leg room. It's almost enough to make me want to try it.

Have you checked the cash rates on BA? I paid about $2,200 last year for BA biz AUS-LHR-TIA-LHR-AUS. I had about 4 hours at LHR on the way over, but an overnight on the return. I was able to stack the AARP and Chase discounts.
