Flight cancelled (BA codeshare)

Am booked on BA metal but under an AA code going from Lisbon to LA, connecting in London.

Ba cancelled the LHR-LAX leg, AA rebooked me in Economy (travelling on a J ticket)… I called AA services and there are no seats in J today- at all- even to SFO etc

Therefore I changed my flight to tomorrow AM, in the first available J flight. 12 hours in the last row of economy when a J ticket has been paid just didnt hit the spot… (trying not to sound precious here!) and was under time pressure on the phone to make my LIS-LHR flight.

The really annoying thing is I paid 1300 euros last week to change the flight from Sunday to Monday.I’m now overnight in London so will need a hotel, in addition I’ve missed my LA hotel tonight.

My question is what compensation am I entitled to ask for?

For context on this - I’m a BA Gold (OWE) but no direct status on AA

thank you for the help!!

As BA operated UK/EC 261 may apply, depending on the reason for the delay-cancellation
BA thread--> https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/brit...261-uk261.html
Best to ask in the BA thread.

If you had travelled in economy, you would have been entitled to a 75% refund for the downgraded sector

As it stands, BA ( assuming that you were on BA281 ) is liable for meals, hotel and incidentals
Depending on the reason for the cancellation, you may well be entited to GBP520 compensation under UK261 - this needs to be claimed from BA

I was on BA 281 but ticketed as AA6229 (I think that’s correct flight number)

so is that BA not AA I should claim from?

Under the EU reg. and the equivalent in the UK the liability rests with the operating carrier regardless who issued the ticket and if codeshare. You need to claim reimbursement of hotel, meals etc from BA; the same with comp. for cancellation of BA281.

As you travel today, you probably mean from Monday to Sunday/today. That change fee is quite high and now you end up on the same flight that you paid to get rebooked from; I sure understand the frustration.

Absolutely - BA is solely liable

Many thanks for all the help! Much appreciated.

Im guessing the change fee (from Monday to Sunday- thank you for the correction!) isn’t refundable?

You are correct

This sounds like the typical BA IRROPs experience when on AA codeshare.

JonNyC had posted they were making backend changes for a more seamless experience with rebookings in these situations.

This reeks of the same old BA cluster.

If AA offered to rebook him in economy for the same day of travel and the OP on his own, switch to traveling the next day so that he could travel in J ( I would rather travel in J too!), are we truly giving him correct advice that he is entitled to UK261 compensation?

I am a little confuse, in that I thought if a person refused the possibility of traveling and booked travel that caused the delay on your own, solely to remain the cabin of choice that UK/EU261 didn't apply?

Please help this neophyte to understand.

Thanks

The only potential issue is that the passenger didn't get BA to handle the rebooking -Unless BA would have rebooked on the AA flight 20 minutes after the BA flight was scheduled for, then the passenger would have been delayed by more than 2 hours and so delay compensation would be due anyway.

Assuming it is an eligible reason for compensation, the OP should get the money

Small update- for anyone who cares- went to the BA Transfer desk when I arrived into LHR from Lisbon who then managed to open a seat up on an AA flight (125 ticket number though) under a different PRN, so I managed to arrive 6 hours late but into LA tonight.

Funny thing is I still now have the flight tomorrow on my other PRN, called AA who said not to worry and it wouldn't cancel my remaining/return flights when I miss it. Still a little concerned but time will tell..!

Worth finding out cancellation reason and seeing whether you are due GBP520

Most likely they will not auto-cancel, but keep monitoring the PNR /the return segments and contact AA in the event that they disappear from the reservation.
