The "starting at" price is 7500 miles, which is significantly lower than the old sAAver price of 12,500. Also, it didn't take me long to find a PHX-BUR flight for 6500 miles (literally the first day I checked for PHX-LAX). I would expect these 6500 mile flights to eventually go away, which is a devaluation, but not a huge one. I'm not sure if 6500 miles was the floor before but I haven't seen anything cheaper within at least the past year.
We fly PHX-LAX/BUR often for international trips (EX-LAX flights are ALWAYS significantly cheaper than EX-PHX), and weekend adventures. I ALWAYS use miles to buy the PHX-LAX/BUR tickets as they are an amazing value compared to paying cash.

The cheap long-haul J award days on AA are gone....and have been.

yeah. remind me that again when I score 2-3 business class flights to the uk each year that have a cash cost of 6-8k (a few days notice - on any airline, not just AA) for 115k miles OR LESS on occasion. the house doesnt win ALL of the time, only MOST of the time. sorry if you havent figured out how to advance from any seven or keno...

There could be inventory issues on through awards on route or they simply don't allow through awards with this routing.

Thanks for this. Years ago, I used to call DL and with any luck, get thru to the international issue dept (can't remember exact name), and they'd be able to issue this kind of itin as one saver fare (17.5k in this example). Do you know if this is still possible? I'm guessing not, but who knows.

Sorry to keep going a bit OT, but since we all think AA is going to the dark side, understanding of and comparison to its predecessors-of-evil is useful.

Most of us are adept at honing in on exploiting sweet spots,. And, revenue management is often slow to pave over them, BUT they eventually get around to it. In the long term, I expect nearly all awards will be directly tied to going cash rates at the time of booking.

Some of the partner deals may still work, but the AA-only deals in this article from March aren't available anymore.

is it really a surprise that a 'few hour' sale round trip to australia for 10k miles - a deal so hot it caused the website to go down - is not available any more?

come on man....

I never claimed that deal would be available now.

LOL

“This product has become the product that our members have gravitated to,” said Chris Isaac, director of loyalty for American Airlines, in an interview with CNBC. The airline followed up by noting award prices set dynamically were lower than the static award chart “up to 85% of the time over the last few years.”

One of my biggest takeaways from this is that EXP seems A LOT more appealing now. It seems much better to buy a Y TATL ticket for 30k-40k and just do an in-app upgrade, etc. versus spending 180k for a one way flight.

Have enjoyed the bargain J class redemptions to SE Asia for a few years. Despite the devaluation, finding these awards even at a higher price is better than trying to find partner awards with one of the other Big 3.

"just apply" implies it's easy to apply an SWU. It's not. Finding C space availability can be tricky and require a lot of flexibility and patience.

You're right. It's more for the ever-present (and often cheap) in-app upgrades

I had no idea SWUs could be used on award TATL trips. So if I find C space eg XXX-LHR I can book a Y reward and clear at booking?

No, you cannot and have never been able to use SWU's on award tickets.
