Change loyalty program before the flight from AA to Qatar
 
I had a hell of a time gettng a particular fare from TH to the US, so as a last ditch effort, I signed up for AA loyalty membership and was able to make a booking even though I am already a Qatar Air member and would rather have the miles go to Qatar Air. I have gone to manage the booking on the aa website, but it looks like the ability to change loyalty program is blocked.

How has anyone been able to change loyalty programs before the flight?

Try giving the call center a try.

Do they actually answer without being put on hold for 30 minutes? I'd be calling from TH, not the US.

I see they do have TH number, M-F, so I will call them on Monday. Thanks

Doing it at check-in should work. Get a paper boarding pass and double check the FF number.
