If free upgrades are eligible how come the phone app shows Not Offered after you hit the upgrade button?

1. Yes, I do it all the time.

2. It may take a while for the upgrade to get requested since something has to get changed on AA's end. This should happen automatically but sometimes it doesn't (I have my theories about what causes this, but I can't be sure). If the upgrade has not been auto-requested within a day of ticket purchase, call the EXP line and they can fix it.

You can also message AA on Twitter. They can fix it also.

AA has a batch process that runs and converts the BE ticket into a non BE ticket with a designation on the back end for CK and EXP customers. It's the kludge of the century.

Only after this change happens, can you get upgrades requested etc.

According to the basic economy rules it's for all status members (not only CK and EXP). I'm not sure if that's a recent change.

There's also something in a footnote about having to book 24 hr before departure. That may be so that this process has time to run.
