772 vs. 789 J

I'm looking at DFW-HND, which runs a 772 and 789 around the same time every day, and/or LAX-HND, which is 2X 789 per day. Regarding the J seats:
  • Are they the same? Are the 789 ones newer, or both similar?
  • They look the same, but are the 789's narrower, given they're both 1-2-1, and the plane is narrower?
  • I'm guessing AA has completely gotten rid of those backwards/forwards alternating disasters that were on the 772 back in the day? Weren't those on the 789, too, or just the 788?
The other options are the JL metal flights, but that seems like a total gamble on what you're going to get. Might just do JL F on 773 from LAX, but the timings suck connecting to/from MEX.

Which would you choose?

Thanks!

I'd take the 789 over 772 as it's a newer plane, likely to be more clean, less broken, and better windows. But, I'd take a direct to HND vs. a connection at LAX even if it was on a 772. Direct over airplane if both have lie flat seats.

789s are newer and guaranteed to have a much better all-forward Super Diamond configuration; most of the 772s I have been on are in bad shape and some still have seats in different directions with minimal storage.

Further, the 789s have slightly nicer lavatories including extra handles that enable you to not have to touch the toilet's seat.

Some 772s still have the alternating/rocking Zodiac seats. Those were (are) on the 788, but all the 789s got the Super Diamond seats, like the rest of the 772s after AA dropped Zodiac. All else equal, I'd rather have the 789 due to the better cabin comfort level (lower pressure, air is less dry).

FFD is still closed at LAX. If you weren't planning on FFD anyway, LAX arguably has some more interesting lounge options.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Trip is MEX-HND, so connecting in DFW or LAX no matter what. So are the 789 and 772 seats the same? Are the 789 ones just as roomy? Lastly, have all 772s been converted to this seat? Agree, the newer plane is likely much improved.

Thank you. Looks like 789 is the winner, and the timings are better on that flight from MEX. Appreciate it!

If i recall, I believe you don’t sacrifice space on the 789. And no the 772s are a mixed bag.

Pretty much echoing what was posted up thread. 789 over 772. I like the ventilation and windows. Newer seats.
Prefer LAX over DFW due to better choice of lounges (for elites of course).

What lounge options at LAX? OW J Lounge? QF F Lounge? I'm OWE (CK.) And yeah, going to roll on the 789. Maybe DFW one way, LAX the other.

Your best bet is the QF F lounge via OWE. Assuming the lounge is open when you’re passing through, I’d do that then go direct to the gate when you get the boarding notification. TBIT to T4 is a 2-5 minute walk depending how quickly you move. There are times when AA uses the TBIT gates so you’d actually end up closer.

No need to hit the FL unless you need assistance with IROPS or want to plane watch, which is always nice at the FL.

W/r/t connecting through LAX — pre-COVID my HND flight parked at a remote stand. This could definitely be a thing of the past, but wanted to point out that wrinkle as DFW doesn’t have the bus situation.

Super helpful thank you.

Doh... the 772 is to NRT, another reason to avoid.

789. Air cabin ventilation is much better. Newer ride.

are you going to cancel your flight if Japan doesn't open by the time you go?

"Open" isn't binary, but yeah, if it's still the group tours BS, not going. This is for cherry blossoms, so there's some time.
