So in my personal opinion having flown this route there is funny non rev stuff happening when it is lie flat as of last year. . As to PHX_HNL flights being normal pricing just think of all the other airlines that fly PHX-HNL route. Hawaiian Air has a better product hard and soft right now so that keeps the PHX_HNL prices cheap. As you have to make what some call a painful connection in HNL to get to OGC on Hawaiian

I know Covid bottled up travel demand, but I still don't get it. Must be people traveling on stolen Covid money or something. I saw the Hyatt Centric at $1,200/night a month or two ago and rental cars at well over $500/day. Total insanity.

Admittedly Bali is far but Mexico is a lot closer than Hawaii and is nowhere near those prices.

You have to understand coach is such hell now with every seat taken, more and more morbidly obese people (taking your personal space), next to no service, etc. I'm not rich but there's no way in hell I'd fly to HI (or AK for that matter) in coach. If I couldn't afford PE/F I'm not going. With boarding time you're on the a/c for nearly eight hours. Many people are more than willing to shell out a few extra thousand for a premium seat.
Normally the 789 is a good plane for upgrade odds. But I was flying PHX/DFW on New Year's day on a 789 and only cleared at boarding because of a no show.

Yeah that's insane. You can get to Bali for $1000 in premium economy (or at least you could book that until last week -- SQ fare sale) and get a beautiful hotel for $100/night. I love Hawaii but not at those prices.

So the upgrade list is now showing on the App. I’m #1 on the list with 30 F seats full.
This should be evidence that the itinerary knows I’m an Executive Platinum with a high amount of loyalty points (100k), since I’m #1 on the list.
Also, 13 people on the upgrade list, on a 789 seems like a very short list. Shows that this leisure route has lower numbers of status flyers.
So even stranger that I wasn’t already upgraded during the previous multiple upgrade windows which had at least 7 available seats at the initial upgrade window, with 10 open seats showing on the seat map.

Not if AA thought it could sell the seats, which it apparently did.

I (mis?)interpreted the OP as saying that 2 F seats were open at the gate and yet OP didn't clear -- it wasn't clear that the OP was made well before the 12-hour waiting-list visibility was even open.
OP being #1 on the list checks out w/ the 100k LPs.
The obvious/easy answer as to why the seats filled up is that people paid for them or, to the extent that you saw "C" availability appear and go away, people used SWUs/miles/BXPs for them. Nothing to see here.

I had to do this last year with over 10 tickets to get updated.
Even if EXP shows in your reservation - the upgrade request at ticket time holds the status at the time.
If you have a companion in your reservation - you need to have the upgrade request for them updated as well.
Basically the upgrade request needs removed and readded. Only an agent can do that.

You are right. If you book before on your old status - you need to call and have AA update the reservation.

#3 on the list now at 3 hours before departure. Just isn’t in the cards today.

Thanks for everyone’s comments thus far. I have a paid PE ticket so it won’t be too bad, just surprised that with 100k LP’s, that I couldn’t get an upgrade with 1/3rd of the cabin open.
EF was showing 7 available. I can’t imagine that people wouldn’t pick their F seat until the last minute. There were 3 C purchasable upgrade seats available but I didn’t use a BXP1 at that point as I thought, what’s the use of earning EP if I just need to use a BXP1, anyway. Lot less hassle to just keep my lifetime Platinum status and use BXP1’s.
I have 7 more of these round trips to take over the next month and a half. I’d like to get this figured out, in case something’s wrong.
