How long for SWU to deposit once selected
I understand that once a threshold is crossed it might take 72 hours for the Elite Reward Choice at 175k miles and 250k miles to be available for selection. I've got the Elite Reward Choice available but haven't selected yet. I intend to select SWU if and only if 'C' inventory opens up on the flights I'm monitoring. If I find 'C', I'll want to move quickly before it vanishes. So, my question is: once I select a reward, specifically SWU, how long until they're available in my AAdvantage account for use? Is it immediate or nearly so?
I've read the whole thread - apologies if I missed the answer to my question.

However I last selected these back in March when the rewards were about to expire, so maybe someone who's selected SWU's more recently can confirm.

IIRC once you select the SWU's they are live in your account pretty quickly. Might not be instant but within a couple minutes.

systemwide upgrade or bonus points reward
I have the option to select 2 systemwide upgrades or 25k bonus points. I have a domestic long haul trip next Summer and would like to fly first. Should i take a chance on the systemwide upgrades or just bank the points and book first with all points?

I'm not sure what you mean by "domestic long-haul," but if it's JFK-LAX/SFO, MIA-LAX, or something to Hawaii or Alaska, I'd say the systemwide is the way to go. Some people say they never clear, but in my experience, I've never had one not clear.

You really need to do some more homework before making a decision, or if you've already done said homework then post the results as it will make the decision making process much easier.
What dates is your trip? Are you flexible on dates or no? How much is a paid ticket and how much are award tickets pricing at right now? Are upgrades currently available on any/all of your potential flights?
Picking SWU's for the sole purpose of using them on one single inflexible trip is always a recipe for disaster, IMO. However if you're flexible on dates and/or upgrade space is available now then that could sway things towards grabbing the SWU's.

Booked tickets outbound with points I had 8/9/24. Would like to return on a specific day 8/19. FCA- PHL (through DFW) . I may be wrong but I believe I have to select the upgrades into my account to see if they would be available. Not comfortable buying coach and hoping for system or comp upgrade on return
Your point is well made on not having flexible dates.

If you truly are focused on just this one trip, I'd suggest miles are probably the better redemption. You can always redeem miles for a first class reward, as long as seats are available, just a matter of what AA's asking for it and how many miles you have in your account. SWU availability if you need it to be confirmed at booking can't be counted on. So guess the answer depends on how many miles you have in your account...

Alternatively FCA-DFW-PHL is available in business for 37k miles one-way.

For the 175K award : “Your 15% off award discount is a rebate that will be applied post travel and can be used to discount the miles required for AAdvantage awards for up to 2 passengers traveling round-trip anywhere on American, oneworld airlines or partner airlines. The award must be redeemed from the selecting member’s account but can be applied to travel by anyone of the member’s choosing. Valid for 1 year from the date of selection.”
Is DFW-CPT (south Africa) and JNB(south Africa) -DFW considered a Round trip? It seems to be for fare bookings but would it apply to this award? Similar case question DFW-MAD, BCN-DFW both spain. Has anyone something like this yet?
