USA- EU 1 ways $$$$

For many years you could buy a 1 way to many EU countries for $500 ish
Now everything seems to be back to $2500-$3000 in Y one way
I wonder if this is a sign of airlines going back to the old model of R/T purchase necessary to EU
Many times would do a cheap one way and fly home on miles it was a great way to do it especially if you were unsure of return date or city

Disagree. One-way's on US-EU on the legacy carriers have generally been very pricey (often requiring expensive M fares) vs. roundtrip fares up until very recently. It was only once Covid hit where they started bringing the pricing down on one-way's due to significantly reduced demand (in particular from business travelers who are the one's who most frequently buy such fares). While they are raising them up again on some routes, there are still many cases where they are still relatively cheap compared to historical one-way pricing (particularly if you look at competitors from hostage hubs). For example, while AA is charging $2K on one-way DFW-LHR fares, UA/DL are charging $595 one-way for same route.

By the way, you can still find roundtrip fares on domestic routes. For example, the cheapest AA one-way fare on DFW-DRO non-stop is $435. While you can get same non-stop flights for $152 each-way ($304 roundtrip) if you purchase as a roundtrip.

This is where Aer Lingus will come in handy. They do one-way pricing and have been ordered to continue to do so by the authorities in on order to join the OW TATL JV.

I just bought an AA one way JFK-CDG for $500 and used a SWU to upgrade at time of booking.

I am sorry, but these are the choices...Either one way for $3k, or round-trip for $300...Tough one, I know...:D

Which many years?

I just bought a OW JFK-FRA ticket for my daughter on SQ in PE for ~$800.

In 1995, I paid $300 for RT Y JFK-LAX. I just checked the price, the price for the same ticket now is $300 to $400

That's nothing. In 1991 my company paid $700 for a RT Northwest ticket in coach on DTW-BOS (relatively close-in, no Saturday night stay) for a conference which was pretty typical for the time. I remember the price because I had a bit of sticker shock when I saw it, but my company didn't hesitate to pay it. I don't remember the outbound flight date, but the return flight was definitely on 1/17/91 as the pilot announced during the flight that Operation Desert Storm had started. I also remember it was a 727 and I was in the back of coach and it was unbelievably loud. Today, the same close-in trip is going for $248 roundtrip on DL in Main Cabin.

One-way's to and from Europe are typically prohibitively expensive, been this way for years.

That said, depending on the season and destination you can still find a few one-way deals on AA and partners. Typically between NYC/Florida and Spain, Italy, sometimes France.

This seems to come up about once a month now for whatever the reason.

Huh? It's like $1200 if you're at least a month out but more than double than in the summer. Best fare for basic economy was $188 on AA. For regular economy, found $201 on UA. Both non-stop. But a *Y* fare? Not even close.

"Y" is understood to refer generically to an economy cabin fare around here, not a Y fare.

A one-way US->Europe for $500 is a mistake fare.

I think Norwegian had one-way fares that were half round-trips but I don’t think the legacies matched (maybe selectively on connecting itineraries?)
I wonder if B6 will have an impact? I assume they do affordable OW to LON.

Covid has changed the equation.
