Same day flight change
 

I know the rules of a same day flight change do not allow nonstop to connecting or vice versa (or even changing where the stop may be).

I’m flying IAH-LGA and want to switch to an earlier flight which can only be done via a stop in DFW, ORD or CLT.

The EP desk has made it clear that it would have to be repriced if I were to make that change.

My question: is it possible to do this at the airport meaning, if an agent wanted to at IAH he/she could put me on standby connecting through one of those locations or do their systems not even allow that to happen?

I would only expect the airport to do that if your original flight is oversold and your free change potentially saves them a voucher for compensation. Most of the time they have to follow the rules about SDFC the same as you do. Sometimes this can even trigger in app or online via email as an offer to swap your flight around.

But if your direct flight is not oversold I do not think an airport agent would be able to do anything for you that a phone agent could not.

Probably doesn't help you if you're looking for an earlier flight, but if you happen to "accidentally miss" your flight (say due to a "flat tire") then the airport agent could have some latitude to list you on standby (or even confirm you) for a later flight with a connection. Works even better if you're able to arrive within 15 minutes of your original flight's departure time. Definitely some risk however. YMMV. Thanks for the replies. I figured as much. I’m hopeful my original flight somehow gets canceled early which will allow me to switch.

Love the flat tire idea but I’m looking to depart 4 hours earlier. May need some type of “back to the future” vehicle to make it happen ;)
