That's a bummer! I guess on the bright side, after March this won't matter at all since these upgrade offers won't provide LPs anyway.
I've never run into this issue despite buying a bunch of upgrades, so don't know of any tricks. Have you tried a different credit card by chance?

yeah, different credit cards and browsers. it has never worked out for me in advance...although oddly today when i clicked thru the offer it gave me two boxes to choose from even though it was the same flight, so an obvious IT issue, but once i selected the correct box that let me thru to seat choice and payment...it always reverts back to "Something's Gone Wrong/Our Systems are Having Issues" ... wonder if the issue perhaps is it is the transcon J to F perhaps? as i only have flown the transcon where i am in J and receive this offer do i run into this snag?

i usually see it for ~$565 but currently shows $348 each way...granted flights are on the weekend and one flight shows one F seat taken and the return shows completely open.
FWIW, the monday after xmas when my JFK-LAX flight was showing full in F when i did online checkin...i just asked for any paid upgrades when i checked in at JFK and they sold me one for $245 which was a shock given some pax obviously opted for different flights or whatnot and left two seats open at T-1hr

Getting an offer now for $97 PHX-DFW-RSW (or the reverse), but the app errors out when I click on it. I'd gladly pay the $97 each for guaranteed upgrades. No offers showing up on the website though.

Dfw-nrt: $350?!
Got a really awesome deal in early 2021 for a DCA-NRT-DCA trip. Had some schedule changes and it was looking like Japan wasn't going to let Americans in due to COVID so postponed to November 2021. COVID variants delta continued to worry government officials so we postponed to February 2022.
Check the app this morning and got an amazing deal for $350 upsell for DFW-NRT!!! Brilliant!! But, here's the catch. I highly highly doubt we're going to go in a few weeks. Should i gamble and buy the upsell now for this low price and then hope AA honors the upgrade to make a voluntary change to a future date? Say, late 2022 if and when Japan lets Americans in again?
Note: no status here with AA whatsoever....i'm lucky if I get to be boarding group 8.

I just about blanked the bed when I logged in this week and saw an $81 upgrade offer for SEA-CLT-CMH. I was entirely non-plussed when I figured out the $81 price was just for the CLT-CMH segment, and the SEA-CLT upgrade was like $434.
PS: I also can't do it anymore in the app-- getting same error message that you are. I have to go on the desktop site for it to work.

I see an offer to upgrade from Business to First for $1200 from DEL - JFK. Is it worth it? Is there any major difference between Business and First except for the PJs? There is no Admirals Club in DEL so I do not see any marked service improvement on ground before boarding the plane.
Also if I pay for the upgrade, do I get LP for the $1200 as if it were part of the fare or do I just get the Credit Card $2 per mile spend?

Also, one more question - if I do bite on this (assuming it's not just for the PHX-DFW leg, which we stand a decent chance of getting sticker upgrades for), can I use a travel credit for it, or is it only cash?

So - tried the website in a private window and it popped up. As nineworldseries mentioned, the $97 is for the 1st segment only. Hard to bite given were in row 11 with massive legroom for a 6:00am flight. Maybe if the price of DFW-RSW comes down...

A new way to offer upgrades
I've noticed that American has changed the way that it does upgrade offers. As shown above, it is now being broken down into individual legs. In the past, an upgrade offer would be for all of the legs on either an outbound or inbound itinerary. In many cases it was a true up-fare that would actually give full F-Class EQD/EQM. Now it separates it by individual leg and appears to not offer full EQD/EQM like paid F.
I too have noticed that it cannot be done on the app through normal means. When I attempt to look at the offer on the app, it says there is an error. However, I can click on "manage trip" on the app to view it. I can also use a web browser to log in and view the offers. Here is an example of what I am seeing whenever I do that. This is for an OKC-MIA-SJU / SJU-MIA-DFW-OKC trip in early February.

It may just be me, but I’m finding that the offers aren’t really “no-brainers” any longer. Whereas previously I’d see upgrade offers for ~$40/hour of blocked time and would basically automatically jump on that, they’re now pricing at $70+/hour and I have to think a lot more about how much I care about guaranteeing the upgrade vs leaving it up to the EXP gods. Anyone else notice that?

Also seeing this as a per segment upgrade now. But very weirdly, everything is doubled for a current roundtrip flight I have in February. Like, each flight appears twice, so instead of 4 segments I have 8 segments. Don’t think I’ll upgrade any of them (if only because my SO is booked on the same flights on a separate PNR using miles) but weird to see. Also tempted to test it out by trying to upgrade one segment and seeing what happens lol but think I’ll resist.

I'm seeing the per-segment offers now, although the headline price is the cheapest segment. For example, I have an upcoming SLC-PHX-LAX trip. In the app I'm being offered to "Move to First for $49". I originally (perhaps naively) assumed this was inviting me to upgrade to F for the whole journey for $49. Closer inspection showed that the offer was actually $97 for SLC-PHX and $49 for PHX-LAX. I'm undecided on the SLC-PHX leg but will take my chances on a complimentary upgrade for PHX-LAX.

I'm being offered $1206 for PE=>F on PHX-OGG (789). Considerably higher than the already outrageous fare differential of $920.
Meanwhile J=>F on JFK-SFO is $360 and Y=>F on PHX-SFO is $97.
