Carrying Violin on E-175

Hi!
Tomorrow, I'm going to be flying with a violin, and it's thirty two inches.

Will it fit in the overhead, or do I need to check it?
thanks

Assuming it meets carry-on standards, yes. A regulation roller will fit in the E75 bins, excepting the bins on the A side of the F cabin, which are smaller. The bins on this aircraft tend to fill quickly, particularly in F, so boarding as early as possible is advised.

US DOT prohibits carriers from forcing instruments that can fit within overhead bins to be checked, even if they're larger than the airline's carry-on size. One exception: if all carry-on space is full, then your instrument will be gate checked. So, make sure you board as early as possible.

I work in the music business. I've never had a problem on the regional jets flying with a Les Paul in its case.
Myself and other music folks have had great luck mentioning the instrument to the FA when you board. Most of the time, they'll smile and let you store it in the closet, or strapped in the seat next to you if it's empty.

Here's some reading materials that may help you: https://www.afm.org/what-we-are-doin...fm-travel-kit/

Good luck! :)

Let's be more specific. For you, I believe that the only limiting dimension is the height of the bin opening, which is 8-1/2 inches on the two-seat side. In other words, once it goes in, it's fine; it's getting it past the opening that's tricky. So unless your case is fatter than those that I've seen, it should fit in the two-seat overhead bins. Good luck.

Here is the page on AA's site which details its policies for musical instruments.

AA policy allows musical instruments as long as they can fit in the overhead, which a violin definitely would. I’ve flown plenty of times with my guitar. I always board in group 2 (or group 1 if I’m flying F) so have never had an issue stowing it. Only once did I get pushback from a GA saying that I would have to gate-check it—I just said no and kept walking.
