using travel credit to book refundable fare.
i was looking at using a travel credit from a flight I cancelled during covid due to NYS travel restrictions at the time. while going through the process it gave me an option of upgrading to a refundable fare for $3. Am I correct to assume the refundable part of the fare is only the amount above the travel credit? Ie if my travel credit is $250 and the refundable flight cost is $303 i would only get back the $53 if i cancelled?

That said......I really want to say that I remember booking a ticket a couple years ago using a partial voucher payment and a credit card for the balance. The flight was cancelled owing to weather and the entire amount of the ticket value was refunded to the credit card. That may be different than your situation because the airline initiated the cancellation in my situation while you're proposing that you initiate the cancellation in your scenario.

"Refundable" means to the original form (s) of payment. In the case of credits the exact form may on occasion differ. The same is true when the carrier cancels or significantly changes the schedule. IADCAflyer had a bit of luck.

Activating this thread to see if anyone has experience with this situation:
1) Looking to purchase a $2,000 refundable ticket
2) Would like to apply existing trip credits totalling $500
Has AA indicated or in practice treated the $1,500 paid above the trip credit would remain refundable if needing to cancel itinerary?
