Widebody (777, 787) on domestic routes to SFO?

the last time I flew SFO-DFW, one of the legs was on an international spec 777.

Is AA still doing this for this route?

As I understand it AA doesn't currently have a widebody capable gate at SFO, so no more SFO-DFW or SFO-MIA on the big boys for now. That is also the reason SFO-JFK is still being operated by the A321T.

Interesting... I thought at first there was a 787 on the ORD-SFO route when AA moved to terminal 1. And here I am thinking it was just yanked from the rotation with the downgrading of routes. So... Until Terminal 1 is completed, we're not to expect AA widebodies here at SFO?

How long ago was this? There are currently a lot of 777s and 787s on domestic routes but I don’t think SFO is one of them. My understanding is that AA’s SFO gates can’t currently accommodate widebody aircraft.

Is that just temporary during terminal construction? Seems a huge oversight not to have gates that can handle widebodies. Never know when they might want to upgauge a flight, operate a charter, or even handle a diversion from LAX.

OP says "one of the legs was on an international spec 777".

Guess that could happen if the route was SFO-LAX-DFW.

Well, this IS FlyerTalk so the leg in question could have been MIA-DFW

Yes this should be temporary, the terminal is still being finished. The remaining gates under construction are set to be able to handle wide-body aircraft.

Or HKG-DFW.

I have done DEN-LAX-HKG-DFW-IAH to get from Denver to Houston

Not related to SFO but I'm booked to fly MCO-DFW on a 777-300ER in early January, got the last first class seat up front as well. I also see 777-200's running from MIA-CLT as well.

If you are looking to fly AA wide-body birds domestically, lots of information here from The Points Guy website:

My understanding is that it's temporary during construction as freeagent mentioned upthread.

Guess the lack of widebody gates ensures the A321T remains in the fleet at least for the moment.

GlobalMatt Dec 19, 2020 12:57 pm

No SFO widebodies, to-or-from, scheduled for at least December per their cargo schedule. :/
