I planned to fly the A330-200 on PE seats, although a connection through CLT on my XXX-LAX itinerary was $100 cheaper so I preferred to take one of the MCE seats on a pmUS A321.

Not only during the holidays
I fear it's not only during holidays. I have a ticket issued several months ago, GIG-MIA-MCO-MIA-GIG. Original return flight from MCO-MIA on February 17th was the 601 leaving MCO at 18:59.
Yesterday, looking into aa.com, the reservation seemed ok. Today, I've entered the aa.com again and noticed the warning of flight changes.
Now it's flight 2661 at 08:15 AM, an almost 12 hours connection, that's unacceptable.
It is even more complicated, it appears that on Tuesdays and Wednesdays there are only 2 AA non-stop flights at all from MCO to MIA, one at 06:13 AM and at 08:15 AM. It appears also that flights would be using 737MAX. Just a coincidence? Also, during the other days of the week, there are only 4 non-stop MCO-MIA flights.

Please note that this not about flights to GIG, but about AA flights between MCO and MIA. Now, for every Tuesday and Wednesday there are only 2nonstop flights, one around 06:00 AM and the other around 08:00 AM. That is simply unworkable for everybody connecting to other places at the evening or night. It's simply crazy. Take a look at the googleflights result for February 17th 2021:
