tia!
Your flight still won't be refundable. But at long as it's not basic economy, "refundable" does not make a huge difference, since refunds go to your form of payment (which would be a flight credit, not cash)

I don't believe that the "same country" restriction exists for trip credits, but it does for flight credits AFAIK. If you buy a ticket with your flight credit the remainder will be issued as a trip credit. So if you have a $1000 flight credit from your Asia trip, and you buy $59 domestic flight, you'll have a $941 trip credit with no such restrictions and a new 1-year expiration. I did that with a flight credit from a cancelled trip to ICN that was about to expire.

You should be able to cancel right up until departure, but the fare rules are authoritative here.

Refund to Closed Credit Card

I cancelled an award ticket three weeks ago. The co-pay fee was charged to a Chase credit card that is now closed. American says it refunded the fee to Chase three weeks ago. Chase says the account for the closed card was purged months ago and the credit would not have been accepted. Any ideas of what to do at this point?

I guessing the ticket was purchased last than a year ago. So the account was closed less than a year ago.

Chase should still have the account avail for refund. Go back to Chase first?

I've had refunds hit Chase accounts closed nearly a year ago. Try calling Chase again and speaking to someone else.

As other have pointed out, the refund almost certainly went to chase.

Assuming that your mailing info hasn't changed, you probably don't need to call them. They will automatically mail you a check after some time. But calling can move the process along.

You should have also gotten an email confirming the refund that you may find useful in your pursuit with Chase.

This situation is quite common. Do the following:
Call American and ask AA for the Acquirer Reference Number or ARN. It will be a 23-25 digit reference number that is generated with each electronic transaction.
Once you have the ARN, provide it to Chase to locate the funds. Chase will be able to tell you if the funds sent to it by AA are in one of its slush funds accounts or if it was rejected back to AA. If Chase does have the funds they are responsible for getting the funds to you, either by cheque or rolling it over to your current chase account. If the funds were sent back to AA, AA can cut you a cheque for the refund or send it to another Chase credit card of the same type if you have one.

Good luck.

Missing Trip Credit?

Cancelled a $218 XXX-MIA ticket earlier today and got the $218 Trip Credit for two passengers. Used that to purchase the same flight now cheaper at $130 each. The new reservation is ticketed but I can no longer find the remaining trip credit for both passengers. Searching by the old reservation #, ticket #, new reservation #, and new ticket # all yield an error message. Any thoughts besides calling in?

Credit to change flight

If you take a credit to change due to an oversold flight but then you need to cancel the flight the next day do you lose the travel credit ?

No, once you get a credit for taking a bump it's yours.

7 days w/in 24 hours

I bought a flight last night but put wrong dates in by mistake. I cancelled it right away (so well within 24 hours): anyway to get access to those funds so I can book again? Its saying up to 7 business days for a refund

Also, wasnt trying to change these, but so I know, these were on trip credits (combined from 2 different family members accounts) that expire next month - what form will this refund come back in? Back to the original persons account for each credit, or all into the purchasing account? Or back to original payment form? And with what expirations?

Just a datapoint but here's the timing of a trip I recently booked with a trip credit but canceled within 24 hrs:

Sep 6: booked and paid for 100% with trip credit
Sep 7: cancelled
Sep 16: refund issued in the form of another trip credit

The new trip credit has an expiration of 1 year from date of issue, so Sep 16, 2024.

When paying with trip credits from different accounts I'm honestly not 100% sure if the trip credit refunds will be split according to whose accounts they came from or if you will just receive 1 trip credit back to your account for the full amount. But any leftover amount you paid with a credit card will be refunded to that credit card.

Would a good solution be to cancel after 48 hours if a TC was used, assuming that leads to new expiry date?

Reading the last page, it's not clear if AA has stopped issuing FC and all cancellation travel credits are now issued TC. Does anyone know?

Hello all, I posted the following in another thread that is related to this one but received no answers:

I thought Flight Credits with AA were no more? This morning I canceled the following:
  • A one-way award - miles returned within 5 minutes.
  • A one-way paid - TRIP credit issued within 5 minutes for proper amount.
  • A RT paid with probably a previous credit and topped off with cash - FLIGHT credit issued - no details. When I go to AA.com and follow the prompts including entering last name and ticket number, it says there is a credit but offers no details. It just says we have issued you a flight credit.
Am I just impatient and it will take a while to push through AA's IT? Is it an error in the system that a flight credit was issued vs trip credit? Is it due to me using "two" forms of payment for the RT ticket? Or do I simply use the old ticket # when purchasing a new fare and it will deduct the value of previous ticket? Thanks for any input!
