Thanks for sharing. Does anyone know if a flight credit can be combined with a trip credit? Booking online gives me an error every time I try to redeem my flight credit and current hold times are 8+ hours...

Has anyone been successful getting a cash refund from AA for a cancelled flight due to COVID but which was issued as flight credit instead of refunded?

Who cancelled it? Them or you? If it was a voluntary cancellation on your part (or even cancelled by you due to government policy/border controls) then youre not entitled to a refund unless you bought a refundable fare or there is some other mitigating factor like a significant schedule change since you bought the ticket. If AA canceled the flight then you should be able to get a refund, try the prefunds.aa.com site and punching in the ticket number there.

I'm contemplating trying this as I have 5 flight credits from a cancelled flight last year and American is one of the worst flight options for our trip this summer, plus all of the same people aren't going. My understanding is if I booked a very cheap flight at least then I could get some money back as a trip credit instead which would then no longer be tied to specific names, is that right?
While that is generally true, two things to consider... most flight credits now expire 3/31/2022. Converting them to trip credits now won’t buy you much of an extension. If I was faced with an expiring flight credit I’d do this closer to expiration. AA may yet extend flight credits again, whereas no such flexibility has yet been demonstrated with eVouchers or trip credits.

Also, be aware that trip credits can only be used for single passenger reservations. So you cannot book multiple people on the same PNR and use trip credits. An annoying limitation that is not imposed for flight credits.

Can trip credits be used in conjunction with AA gift cards?

I use credits here and there. One time, I used one and then changed my mind about the flight and cancelled within 24 hours. I got my money back....Weird how I got a credit turned into money back to my card?

Really? I didn't know that; the one time I did call to use mine, the agent told me she could only put one in and I had to put the remainder on my credit card. I have two flight credits to spend ($127.20 & $92.51) that I'd like to combine so I will keep your experience in mind when I book my next itinerary.

Does anyone have experience applying a flight credit that is higher than the cost of the flight booked?
What happens to the difference - does the balance remain as flight credit or do they (like in the old days) print and mail a paper voucher?

The language on the website changed. It used to just say "1 per passenger", but now it says "aa.com allows 1 per passenger". Reservations agents now have the ability to apply two.

Normally results in a Trip Credit. Occasionally an eVoucher, though I haven't quite figured out how or why that happens.

My last few have been eVouchers, but have received Trip Credits in the past. There might be some pattern, but I chalk it up to that AA inconsistency we all know and love. :-D

I had canceled the return of a round trip ticket. I was told by csr while canceling that I would receive a credit associated with the ticket number. On aa.com when I look up the flight by ticket number it shows canceled but no indication of a travel credit. Does not appear in "wallet" either. Is there a way to see it? Or does this mean credit was not applied ?

Update: Got a chat agent. Their wait times for an agent are unbearable. The chat agent claimed they could not see value and it would be automatically calculated when I book a new ticket which I have to do by phone since the flight was partially canceled. Not viewable in wallet Expires Feb 2022

I am using the Flight Credit rebooking through aa.com and the flight options they give me really suck. Is there a trick to have the page load more of them? If I search for a flight it has plenty of good options available.
