I flew MIA-DFW on a Boeing 777-200ER and I did NOT check seatguru before booking my flight as I was just happy to book Flagship business and get a window seat.

Much to my dismay, I was on the 777-200ER Version 1 where the Flagship Business are Safran (formerly Zodiac) Concept D seats configured 1-2-1 with alternating forward/backward facing seats and I was in the backward facing row 2. To be honest, I was a little disappointed in myself for making such a rookie mistake, but was still happy it was much better than the standard FC 2+2 seats.

Is it just me or does flying backward in a plane just feel strange, especially on takeoff. Also, it seemed a little creepy to glance across the aisle to the middle seats looking back at me.

On the return I was on the 777-200ER Version 2 Flagship Business with Collins Aerospace Super Diamond seats configured 1-2-1 and this was far superior for me (again booked in row 2 window).

Oh well, I will try to pay more attention in the future.

I've flown on a few private jets where the seats default to "backwards" but rotate, its something you get used to pretty quickly but it does feel a little weird on takeoff..
The saving grace is that on a hard landing, you're in a much better position to come out unscathed
TBH on Citations I actually have come to prefer the backward facing seats and although I've only been on the 200ER once in the last year, where I was facing forwards, I don't think it would bother me much.

I, personally, go out of my way to book a rear-facing seat if I can. Each to their own.

No need to use seat guru. I wouldn’t trust it as more often than not it’s simply wrong and they don’t update it.

The backward facing seats are marked on AA seat maps.

Seatguru is pretty much garbage. And I too prefer to sit backward, especially on overnight flights.

I didn't fly on the reverse seats on the AA 77E but I did on the same exact seats ( Safran Concept D ) on the AA 787-8 and I found them really comfortable and didn't feel any strangeness.
I was happy to fly on that seat on a 2h30min DFW-MIA hop and had a good nap during the flight and I would prefer those seats over any AA Domestic First seats.

I have flown these Concept D seats on the 788 from ORD-DFW and for that length of flight I am good with it as I wouldn’t sleep on the flight but for a long haul it is a problem for me because when fully flat it is really uncomfortable for me 5’11 to try sleep due to how narrow the footwell is. Have been equipment swapped to the 772 with those seats and the next morning after little to no sleep I became a cranky flier 😅

If I recall, all 772 flights show the forward facing seatmap until a few days before the flight when the aircraft is assigned, so you probably did not miss anything at booking. Luck of the draw.

That was my experience also. MIA-LAX 777-200 didn't show the the seats facing backward until the day before. I swapped my 5A for 2L. Facing backwards was quite comfy and the line of sight to 2D had me looking at the screen inflight. I would take that aircraft/seat combo again. The absence of foot traffic was the best benefit.

Sitting in one right now, and love it. My last rear facing seat was UA 772 HD 2-4-2 config; also window seat then.

Definitely prefer a rear-facing seat Concept D seat. Plus they have more personal space and a larger area for entering/exiting the seat.

i guess i recall the feeling at takeoff or landing when facing backwards the first few times but frankly i much prefer that over forward facing. literally hundreds of flights later i ensure i opt for a backwards facing seat on BA and AA when i can. definitely more comfortable for me.
