AA Adds DFW/PHL-DAB (Daytona Beach, FL)
 

Both have been loaded, with flights starting 12-17-20. PHL-DAB is on a CR7, DFW-DAB is on a CR9.

Not surprised to see DAB get PHL given MLB made it work, but DFW is a surprise. This looks a lot like the brave new world of trying to take advantage of sunshine destinations amidst a pandemic but, as a frequent DAB visitor, I'll take all the options I can get in case of IROPS.

But why starting 12-17-2020? Weather around DAB could be marginal during second half of Dec.

Is that seasonal or year-round? :confused:

Exactly. Fall is one of the quietest times of year for leisure travel here in Florida. (By "fall", I means the actual dates of the season: mid September to mid December.) Winter season for leisure travel is mid December into April.

Interesting adds. I wonder if MLB will end up seeing DFW also. These are certainly long flights on a CRJ.

I've seen highs anywhere from the 30s to the 90s at Christmastime in Daytona. All depends on what Mother Nature feels like doing that year.

In general around Christmas it’s pretty nice. 70s in the day and 60s or 50s at night. If it’s a warm year it may be in the low 80s during the day, or if a cold front has just moved through it could be 60s in the day and 40s at night. 30s and 90s would be pretty rare that time of year, possible no doubt, but rare.

While FL weather in the winter can be variable (unlike summer which, outside of tropical systems, is the same day after day after monotonous day June-Sept), I think your memory might be faulty. Record high for DAB in December is 87 or 88 from what I can find on the internet (I've seen both).

I really doubt highs in the 30s that close to the ocean that early in the winter, though I suppose maybe in a record cold snap it is possible (can't find info on daily maximum record lows). Almost certainly not on multiple occasions in living memory.

December is pretty reliably beautiful, which explains all the northern U.S. and Canadian license plates that show up around then. Also they are not necessarily only weekly vacationers but also people with second homes in FL, many of whom start their FL seasons in December.

I'm procrastinating doing real work today, so I looked up the averages and records for Daytona Beach, FL.

Because I had to look up each day individually for the records, I chose the last 15 days of the month. (That time frame also corresponds to the date when the AA flight begins.)

Unfortunately, the records didn't provide dates. But, I did find a blog that stated that the coldest temperature ever recorded in Daytona Beach was 15 degrees back in 1985. It also states that the area usually only drops below freezing 5 days annually.

One thing to keep in mind is that if it's 25 F in Daytona it's probably below zero up north.

Yes that is consistent with what I saw. I just couldn't easily find anything about coldest / lowest daily high temperatures (although I know that data is out there somewhere).
