Booking Alaska on AA.com: Any AA or oneworld status benefits? (2020)

American Airlines and Alaska Airlines are working together to become closer and more integrated partners with the addition of mileage accrual across both airlines. As Alaska Airlines prepares to join Oneworld in 2021, Alaska and American are expanding codeshare agreements and providing frequent flyers of both programs to once again earn and redeem miles. Starting April 1, 2020 all flights on either airline can earn miles (award and elite qualifying, as of an April 7 update to the AA web site) for the other airlines frequent flyer program. Also, starting in spring 2021, AA elite members will receive priority check-in, security and boarding on Alaska Airlines flights, as well as bag allowances, and access to Alaska Airlines lounges when traveling internationally.

AA and AS had previously agreed to cease all mileage and codeshare agreements as of March 1, 2020.

Booking on AA for AS (AA Gold) - Baggage Fees?

If I book on Alaska Airlines metal in economy on AA.com do I get my elite (AA Gold) complimentary luggage without fees? I may purchase or use AA miles.

Looking at a trip in July 2020 to Alaska.

Thank you.

David

You get free baggage only if AS joins OW in time.

Thank you. What if I route it with the first leg on AA and subsequent legs on AS?

IIRC, if the baggage can be interlined, then you don't have to pay for the AS segment. But again, it won't matter during return (AS would be the first segment back).

No fee if the AA segment is first and everything is one ticket.

If booking round trip, AS will charge a fee for the return. However, bags on flights entirely within Alaska are free. So if you fly FAI-ANC-DFW, with segment 1 on AS and 2 on AA, theres no charge.

Free bags for AA elites on all AS flights will start in summer 2021, assuming AS follows through on joining OW.

He's right! You can get 1 free checked bag. Early boarding, choose your seats, and upgrades.

Does it show one bag somewhere?
AS gives its own elites 2 bags, and OW status benefits do not include extra baggage for Ruby (AA Gold)

No. But mirroring what AA is doing now, OW Ruby would be getting a free check bag. Based on the AS generosity, the allowance may be more.

The last time AA and AS offered reciprocal benefits, AS gave AA Golds two bags.

Alaska isn’t scheduled to join oneworld until next year. There is no one world or AA status benefit until then. AS baggage rules apply. Sorry. Booking AS on as.com right now only makes AA your travel agent for that ticket.

Earn AA Award Miles, EQM, EQD, EQS Flying Alaska / AS Again (as of 1 Apr 2020)

Right! Not yet. They will join Oneworld sometime next year or so. Subject to change.

Very interesting. Perhaps deserves it's own thread assuming that these new benefits won't require AA elites to book AS flights on the AA website.

Anybody know if it is possible to call AA and have them ticket reservations entirely on AS? Looking at JFK-SFO but want to be able to use ticket value on future AA flights if I dont make the trip.
