Are AA 777's under threat of being retired similar to delta?
With Delta announcing they are retiring the 777's, is this something to worry about with AA? I am a huge fan of 777s, and much prefer them to 789's when traveling over the ocean and it would be a shame for them to disappear from AA's lineup.

It’s not really comparable. At 18 units (out of 155), the 777 is a pretty insignificant part of the Delta fleet. Whereas at AA the 777 consist of over half the longhaul fleet. (67 out of 126 planes)
I’d expect the A332’s to leave first (they’re being stored till at least 2021, as is)
Of course, we don’t know the future of the world/airline industry with the whole Covid situation. If it’s so bad AA feels the need to cut its long haul fleet in half, then I would certainly expect them to get rid of (a portion of) the 777 fleet before touching the 787s.

It seems that DL is dropping Boeing once and for all.
So unless AA wants to make the same move, there is nothing to worry, especially, AA's B77W are not that old.

Off topic for the AA-forum but: Huh?
DL has 767s, 757s (more than 100 of them), 737s (more than 200 of them), and 717s.
Some of those aircraft may be retired as this downturn draws on.
But there's no evidence or suggestion of them "dropping Boeing once and for all"

AA needs seats with a large number of business seats to fly to LHR, their largest overseas destination. Currently, the 777s are configured with the highest ratio of business to economy seats, and their Atlantic joint business partner BA has planes with an even higher ratio. Additionally, the fact that many of the cargo-only flights are operating with 77Ws is telling -- there are certain destinations for which the cargo revenue is lucrative and having the extra cargo capacity over a 789 is quite useful. Additionally, it looks like many of the 788s are going to be allocated to PHL to replace 767s and 333s in the NS transatlantic schedule (or what is left of it).
I'd say AA keeping the 777s would be a pretty safe bet, but we might only see them flying to A-markets like LHR, CDG, TYO, EZE, etc. I suspect the 332s may be shorter lived actually.

Highly doubt it. The AA and DL 777 fleets are very different. For AA the 777 is the backbone of the intercontinental fleet. At DL it’s a relatively small number of aircraft mostly dedicated to ULH routes (SYD, JNB, BOM, etc.). If AA were to dump the 777 it would mean not only a reduction of ~70ish? widebody aircraft in addition to the already retired A330s, but also it would leave AA with the 787-9 as it’s largest aircraft. Unlike DL, AA does not have any A350s. For all of those reasons I highly doubt the AA 777 fleet will be leaving us anytime soon. There may be a reduction in -200s, but certainly not a total retirement at the moment. Unless of course AA goes bankrupt and ceases operations, that’s another story of course.

Ok thanks everyone, I can breath a sigh of relief. I actually seek out international flights on 777s whenever I can just because I love those birds.

AA has 22 787-8, 20 more on order. AA has 22 787-8, 25 more on order. (All will have Super Diamond seats in J.)
Older 777-223ERs were expected to begin departing the fleet in 2023.
AA has retired the nine A330-300s, and has all 15 A330-200s parked.
AA has 17 A321neo, 53 on order. As well, it has 50 A321XLR on order. These can fly transatlantic routes.

The 772s and 77Ws are in very different places in their life cycle at AA. It's virtually impossible to imagine them retiring the 77Ws, the oldest of which was delivered new at the end of 2012. Retiring the 772s is not quite as crazy, but as noted, it serves a much more prominent role in AA's fleet than Delta's, with the 772 as the backbone (increasingly replaced by the 787s) and the 77W as the flagship.
That said, there's a lot that was virtually impossible to imagine just over two months ago.

This is basically like asking is DL going to retire the A330 causes AA is. Each services a different purpose for each airline.
