In response to the SARS-CoV-2 novel Coronavirus pandemic economic slowdown and resultant decrease in travel, American Airlines is retiring 156 aircraft by removing four different models and some older 737 NG aircraft:

Airbus A330-300 (all 9 to be retired 2020)
Boeing 737-800 (76 older airframes)
Boeing 757-200 (remaining 34 to be retired by end of summer 2021 season, but last went to ROW in April)
Boeing 767-300 (last one of 17 in service this year retired to ROW / Roswell, NM on 31 March 2020)
Bombardier CRJ200 (19 to be retired)
Embraer E190 (20 to be retired during 2020)

Most of these are already parked.

Sad. I quite liked the 763, especially the new-build ones from 2003 that had the Boeing Signature Interior. Great ride in Y with the "old fashioned" seating that had plenty of back support in comparison to today's slimline seating. I wish AA had refurbished them entirely like UA/DL had done. I wonder what will happen to the batch from 2003? I know one of them was written off from the fire at ORD a couple of years ago.

I know some have posted about the lack of PTVs, but at the time, AA had intended to install PTVs in Y on the 763s, hence the new build 763s came factory delivered with IFE equipment (underseat boxes and remote controls) installed.

I have heard that all seasonal CLT European routes will shift to a 787-8. LHR will likely shift to a 772, and I have heard FRA might as well.

Based on the news today it looks like CLT is finally getting 787/777 service

Sadly not happening. All 767 are now off the schedule. Last one ferried to Roswell today.

Surely would have been, had the fleet draw down occurred as planned. Not in this emergent scenario.

Glad I planned a few trips last year around the 76 and a few on the 75. I’ll miss them.

You and me both. They dumped megabucks into fitting all the youngest ones with Sat WiFi, as they were supposed to fly out to 2026, IIRC.

Afterwards management did an about face on that deciding to keep the US 330’s instead, and started drawing them down. Now the 333 and 767 will be gone, and the 332’s I bet will be withdrawn too, when all the Dreamliners arrive if they aren’t deferred due to lack of routes to fly.

767’s are headed for freighter conversion. Used 767’s are (hopefully still) highly desired.

Yep, I had a nice dream for exactly two days. However I'm just happy the flights are still running, albeit with an A-321 now instead of a 763.

It had been years since I was on a 757, very glad I had one back in February. My last 767 was a little over a year ago.

AA to retire 76 older 737-800, 9 A330-300, 20 E190 aircraft

American Airlines to Retire Older Boeing 737 Jets

Business Traveler, Kurt Stolz, 31 March 2020

American Airlines said it plans to retire some 76 Boeing 737 Next Generation jets as well as nine Airbus A330-300s wide-body airliners and 20 Embraer 190 regional jets. The world's largest airline currently has 304 737-800s in its fleet...

The move was announced in an online town hall meeting with the company’s employees on Sunday by its president, Robert Isom. Isom said that the airline expects to begin receiving new 737 Max jets later in the year and that these would be used to replace older 737 Next Generation aircraft in need of heavy maintenance.

The airline previously said it would accelerate the retirement of its 31 Boeing 757-200s and two remaining 767-300ER wide-body airliners.

N347AN was the last one - I'll miss 'em!

The 767 played a significant role in my airport career; worked hundreds of flights and have basically seen every corner (except the avionics compartment) of 58 aircraft...even had a flight deck-key.

Thanks for the memories!

I think before this is all over we might be further retirements-the 320s and the first late 90s batches of 772s, particularly if long haul travel takes a while to come back.

This is the entire batch of 1999-2001 delivered 738s, none of which have been through Oasis yet.

At this point CLT-LHR might be the only ex-CLT widebody route that soldiers on. Everything else is highly dependent on connecting traffic flows that no longer exist.

The had already planned to retire the 1999-2001 737-800's, but the delay in the Max kept them in service up until this point. Not surprised they are going.

Depends on how much cycle they have left until the next C or D check. I think AA would rather hold on to them and delay the 789. Oil is less than $30 a barrel and there is no debt service cost on the fully paid for and depreciated 772. They all have new business class seats which were installed at the last major check. So my guess is they have quite a ways to go before another major check.
