If people turned away in droves and stopped flying AA entirely because they don’t block middles, AA might change their mind. But clearly there’s a sizable demographic that doesn’t really care about that.
Honestly, I think the bigger question is why is DL (and the others) still blocking middles? Do they think this is going to generate goodwill amongst customers beyond the time they start opening middles back up? I somewhat doubt it.

Agreed. They’ve sort of backed themselves into a corner because now if they discontinue it they have to increase their service levels to that of AA/UA. Otherwise there will be virtually no reason for anyone to choose DL. They certainly don’t have a better schedule or cheaper fares at this point.

I arrived at the MIA AC yesterday afternoon to do some work before a 7PM flight and it was dead. About an hour later after a call I looked up (around 5PM) and the MIA D30 AC was packed to the gills. Looked like typical pre COVID 19 days, even with few evening International flights. The terminal was also packed albeit with a reduction in the flight banks I've noticed there's a much more pronounced ebb and flow with crowds.
The biggest problem however was potential superspreaders at baggage claim at Miami -- all bags were being routed to two or three shared carousels, which were slow (as usual) but heavily crowded (not usual). Most people had removed their masks, and were milling around the carousels for 15 to 30 minutes. No announcements about which flight to which carousel. And the arriving car traffic was the heaviest I have seen since February.

The Miami situation is growing untenable. Arrived yesterday evening on a nearly full flight (F was full, coach had a few empty middles in the front -- bags were gate checked -- pax were only partially compliant with the mask rules).
