I have an award ticket booked in April 2019 for travel to the Indian Wells tennis tournament next week, which was just cancelled. Outbound and return on separate record locators. I read this announcement to say that I can only rebook for travel through April 2020 - which is what I could anyway since it is an award ticket. When I called yesterday to try to cancel it and get the miles back without the redeposit fee, they said to request a waiver of the fee by email, which I did and got an auto response saying they's respond within ten business days, so not much help there. Anyone got any helpful suggestions other than HUCA?

I am assuming this is retroactive. I had a flight on Monday that I had to cancel that was booked 2/27. The agent told me there would be a change fee when I rebooked. I reached out to customer service but did not hear anything. Anyone know if I had to cancel before this change if they will honor this policy?

How does this work in practice? About a week ago, I bought some ORD-LAX tickets at an amazing price for travel next weekend. I am rethinking this trip now. Do I need to call to cancel or can this be done automatically via the web/app? Also, is it "banked" (for future use so that I don't have to decide right now my future travel plans that I want to apply the $$ to), or do I need to have another itinerary in mind that I need to immediately rebook something else?
Thanks in advance for any help, particularly from anyone that has actually gone through with the process.

Just to provide additional clarity from https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/travel-alerts.jsp
Keep in mind:
EDIT: Also dcchi above.
Change your trip or cancel and rebook later
You’re allowed to make changes to your trip once. You can change it now, or cancel and rebook later.Keep in mind:
- Travel must start by December 31, 2020 or within 1 year of date the ticket was issued, whichever is earlier.
- The change fee will be waived but you may still owe any difference in ticket price when you rebook your trip.

Just bought tickets for next month. I don't see anywhere anymore that changes must be made 14 before departure. Is this still the case? If not, how far up to departure? Now it says changes must be made before departure but doesn't give a time frame

No, they got rid of the 14 day requirement. You can now change up to the day of departure.

This is what I am wondering. Would rather just cancel my Prague trip I have next week instead of changing. I am not sure if I would be able to fit it in later this year. Plus I am sure the fare difference would be high considering I paid around $600 RT for my current tickets.

Note also the [EDIT: travel, not reissue] date of 12/31 at the latest, or 1 year from original date of issue if earlier.
