FWIW, there is some C space available for the outbound around your dates:
DFW-LAX-LIH on 8/16 is C7/C3
DFW-KOA on 8/16 is C7
DFW-OGG on 8/17 is C7

I believe it would cost 15k + $175 (or a SWU) to upgrade.

Personally, I would book a one-way DFW-LAX-LIH on 8/16 for $350 in Y and upgrade with miles, and then book the return LIH-DEN-DFW on UA (lie-flat) for $939.

A very good idea. My travel newbies won't care about the AA miles and the miles copay is something I always forget about

Ended up booking the mixed AA DFW-LAX-LIH (using miles+copay) and the LIH-DEN-DFW on UA. Total of aorund $1,600 at my 1 CPM rough valuation. Thanks for the suggestion aacar!

This thread is one of the reasons why I enjoy Flyertalk. I've been here a long time, and it's gotten quite huge, almost too much so to follow. But, this type of post and the result are great.
