Upgrading Award flight on AA
 
I got an award ticket using AA miles for a Main Cabin seat on a AA flight in May....can I upgrade to next class (PE) using miles + cash like you can when you buy a cash ticket?

No.

But when you check in, you may be offered a cash upgrade if there are seats available.

Unless the rules have changed, you should be able to change your MC award ticket to a PE ticket without any change fee IF the award seat is available. You’d owe the difference in miles, which depending on the price of the original and new awards might be significantly more than the miles + copay equivalent.

No, that only happens with paid tickets. PE upgrades are not offered on Y awards.

I was told flying on award ticket as gold under 500 miles still won't be on the upgrade list is that accurate?

Correct, only EXP/CK are eligible for upgrades award tickets like that.
