AA agents have occasionally allowed passengers with booked travel wishing to cancel because of Coronavirus concerns to cancel without fees, but this is not AA official policy. Possible reasons:
Events, meetings, etc. you were to attend have been cancelled due to Coronavirus concerns, so your trip would be in vain.
You have documentable health conditions that your doctor feels are sufficient to cancel travel plans.

JFK-CDG resumes July 7 so I presume that means CDG-JFK starts July 8. I'm booked for July 4. Maybe more updates to come? Service dates from this: Newsroom - American Airlines Announces Summer Schedule Changes to Match Reduced Customer Demand Related to COVID-19 - American Airlines Group, Inc.
The reduced summer schedule, as well as the previously announced domestic schedule reductions for May, will be reflected on aa.com starting Sunday, April 5.

Somewhere they have a disconnect. But regardless, I have a flight back from Europe, but no flight to get there! (not that we're going anyway).

assuming all your flights were booked just one booking...you don’t need all flights to be cancelled to obtain a refund of all unused segments; you just need one to be cancelled.

Check the currency you paid in and the rate on the date you originally paid vs now. 1GBP = 1.35USD on 12/12, but 1.16USD on 3/22. If it was due to currency fluctuations, unfortunately, you're out of luck. Sometimes it works in your favor and sometimes it doesn't :/ The US has sharply appreciated against most other currencies in the past few weeks so it's likely going to not work in most US-based travelers' favors.
However, the pound has only declined by 4.58% since 12/24/19 (from $1.2931 to $1.2339).
4.58% of $2,032.54 the original fare paid) is ~ $ 93.
So currency fluctuations does not seem to explain the $179.91 shortfall in my refund.
Great theory, though!

I have a flight coming up on the 10th, returning on the 14th. The seven daily non-stops from TPA->DFW and the reverse have already been cut to 3 & 4 flights respectively. It's doubtful that all 7 (in total) will fly. I really don't want vouchers. I was thinking about moving my outgoing flight to 13th in hopes that one of the legs would get canceled. And since AA usually starts canceling flights at T-48 hourss, it sounds like it might work. However, I remember something in AA's language suggesting that a flight could only be moved once without incurring a change fee.
Has anyone tried this?

I paid in US dollars on December 24, 2019. Perhaps AA paid BA in US dollars and BA refunded in now less valuable British pounds. That makes sense.
However, the pound has only declined by 4.58% since 12/24/19 (from $1.2931 to $1.2339).

What was your complete itinerary and was it purchased on AA/OTA US site and is your a US credit card? If so then if your original ticket was denominated in USD on a US credit card, you should have received a full refund on a wholly unused ticket; currency conversion will have no effect.

AA never paid BA anything. If your ticket# begins with 001, it means AA issued/plated the ticket and have the funds associated with the ticket. Money does not go to operating carrier (BA) until the passenger is flown.

Strange that it was handled this way. But ----> case closed.

I am trying to get a refund of cash on my AA basic economy tickets. I have no status on AA.
I received an e-mail from AA indicating that my family's flight departing this Friday, April 3, LAX - SJC (first leg of a ticket sold by AA to LHR, connecting to BA metal) was cancelled and that AA was "working to rebook our trip."
I am not interested in rebooking. I do understand AA's current lenient policy on rebooking.
When I use the AA refund webpage, I get this message:
"Due to the status of your itinerary we are unable to complete your refund request. Your itinerary needs to be cancelled prior to requesting a refund. Please click here to cancel your reservation and return here to submit your request."
Should I cancel this reservation (which has already been cancelled by AA) as the error message suggests?
Or, will MY cancellation cause me problems in obtaining a cash refund?
Thanks for any guidance.
I have been an air traveler since 1955, a frequent air traveler since 1970 and have been burned twice by airline financial woes (the bankruptcy's of Peoples Express and of USAir). Twice burned = very shy!
UPDATE:
Received an automated phone call from AA saying the LAX - SJC leg was cancelled and rebooked to a Saturday departure 4/4. The automated system allowed me to decline the rebooking. Then told to hold for an agent.
My hold time was ~ 60 seconds. The agent allowed me to cancel and refund the entire fare to the credit card. The agent asked me for the full name on the credit card, address, and phone associated with the credit card. This was NOT to confirm my identity...she was copying all this information down and asked for spelling on some items.
I asked about a $222 seat selection fee paid to British Air. She could not help me get a refund on that. I am pursuing with BA.
While I was talking with the agent, I received an email showing my rebooked itinerary LAX - SJC (but nothing of the SJC - LHR leg). That email contains the option to "confirm or change" the rebooking. I don't know if a refund would be offered via the email link or not.
Hope this helps.
In summary, my automated phone call came ~50 hours before my departure time. The process of obtaining a full refund was quick and easy. Prior to this phone call, I received two contacts allowing me to change flights or to cancel and take credit for a future flight. Ignoring those was the best path to a full refund.
UPDATE 4/6/20: A refund of our $2,032.24 tickets to London was posted to our credit card today (six days after AA cancelled the reservation). However, only $1853.33 was refunded, leaving a balance of $179.24. Taxes?

if my state is still under mandatory stay-at-home order(or worse) in May, won't I technically be breaking the law by going to the airport on the day of my flight? If I comply with the order and can't fly, shouldn't AA offer me a refund on the ticket? since my event at Javitz Center in NYC is cancelled, I no longer have a valid reason to travel from my home airport to NYC.... which mean my travel to the airport is not essential.

I think we can only ask the airlines to do so much. If the flight goes as scheduled, then I don't see that AA owe you a refund. It's neither their fault nor yours that we are in these circumstances; I don't think it's fair to ask them to shoulder the entire burden of the pandemic as it affects air travel. You can still get a voucher for future travel without paying a change fee, after all.

I have a flight this week to Key West that likely will operate empty because key west is basically closed; I’m not going. It’s frustrating because my funds will expire July 2020 (1 year from booking date). I Doubt we’re flying for leisure by July 2020...

Apologies if this has been answered before, but what's the latest i can cancel a flight to get the credit for future use (under the coronavirus policy)? Unfortunately my flight from MIA to CUN on Friday morning still seems to be running and as I'm in the UK I have no way of taking it. I'm still holding out hope that it will get cancelled and i can get a refund, but if it doesn't does anyone know how late i can leave it to cancel myself as credit would be better than losing the money entirely?
