Didn't see this posted here but DL just announced canceling all China flights until April 30. No doubt AA will follow within 24 hours.

Flights to Beijing and Shanghai will cease today and resume March 27, American said in an email Friday, a day after the U.S. government warned people not to travel to China. Delta said it would would halt service starting Feb. 6 to give customers looking to leave China a way to do so. Delta will restart flights April 30.

I have an upcoming trip to Vietnam via HKG (CX outbound, AA returning) on an AAward ticket, and AA so far has provided no option other than rebooking at a later date dependent on space. I asked to be proactively rerouted on JAL via Tokyo, but since J space is nonexistent on my travel dates, they can offer no alternatives. They also said if I cancel, a redeposit fee will still apply which I think is ridiculous. So far I'd say their help has been a small step above none.

AA Cancelling HKG Next Two Days
AA has cancelled AA193 LAX-HKG tonight through Feb. 2. Anyone know why? Is this pilots refusing to fly?
I'm booked HKG-LAX in two weeks to complete my EXP challenge.

I have an AAdvantage milesaver award on Cathay Pacific from PEK-HKG-YYZ for May 6, 2020 returning home for a cruise that was scheduled to land in Shanghai May 02. Princess has since announce that our final port will now be Tokyo and will no longer visit Shanghai. I called American asking if I could change the departure city to NRT or HND. I was told they could not help me because I am flying Cathay and Cathay cannot help me because it is an AAdvantage award. I need the lie flat seat for medical reasons and cannot afford to pay 8600 x 2 for a Biz Class to get home. I cannot cancel the original flight because there is no award space inventory available on any airline leaving the Tokyo area for me to use the miles after doing a redeposit.
I really dont wish to take up involuntary landed immigrant/refugee status in Tokyo. Do any of the FF; veterans have any suggestions how to extricate myself from this mess. Cancelling the cruise or the other 3.5 weeks traveling the rest of Asia is not an option.

Question: Since I’m flying on 3/10 LAX-HKG-CEB, should I wait a while before attempting to contact AA again (current itinerary is AA193 connecting to CX925)?
When I contacted them yesterday, I was told that my options were to delay travel, or accept a re-route to Manila (LAX-NRT-MNL). Would AA even consider allowing me to switch to Philippine Airlines in Narita (to Cebu), or would their responsibility end when I land in the Philippines? (Current return itinerary is MNL-HKG-LAX on CX and AA, so my originally booked itinerary is LAX-HNL-CEB//MNL-HKG-LAX).

Not sure the reason but looking at a few days past 2/2 all of the routings seem to go through NRT with JL flying to HKG, ORD/jfk/sfo with CX going to HKG. Wonder if cancellation is soon to be announced out of LAX

My Feb 2 flight was cancelled. Tried calling in but message said there's a hold time of 2 hours. Apparently related to pilot's refusing to fly into China (even though Hong Kong is considered a separate territory).

Looks like you got "lucky" - Vietnam apparently just banned all flights to/from China (including HKG) through May 1st: https://twitter.com/JournoDannyAero/...18490558005249

My Feb. 18 HKG-LAX itinerary still shows normal but I'm obviously concerned. CX won't count for my challenge; JL would.
IMO that's entirely the wrong attitude. This is not a carrier caused problem. They are even more unhappy about all this than we are, it's costing them a ton of money.
They can just refund your ticket and tell you "good luck."

If you can't get anything, you are entitled to a refund of miles and any cash spent on taxes. AA likely will not do anything above and beyond the refund as this is completely out of their control. Note that once you request a refund, it will be very difficult to get them to open up award space should you see an itinerary that works, so I wouldn't do that unless you are out of options.
