This just happened to my companion and I at boarding. It seemed like our seats were scrambled somehow and we were unassigned. What they had for us was still J (domestic) but not together. Fortunately an upgraded pax that did have what had been my assignment swapped with me so we were back as before. This same thing happened to me a couple years ago. I feel like I should obsessively keep checking my seat after I’ve checked in. I feel like I could have easily lost my F seat altogether.

Obviously each of us has our own seating preferences but being a FT reader should be sufficient to understand that seat assignments are not guaranteed and to understand that given the timing and OP's seat location it's 100% an air marshal situation. Nothing AA can do about it and yes, it's insane to demand reaccom to BA in this situation (moreso given that OP has upgraded using an AA instrument, which isn't valid on BA).

it’s not necessarily “100% am air marshall situation”. I’ve had the same thing happen multiple times in paid J and the occupants were very obviously not FAMs. I too loathe the middle J seats, so totally h set stand this complaint. AA DGAF and the poster may get a few miles. It’s insulting.

expertflyer.com allows you to set an alert that will email you when certain seats, or certain types of seats, become available on a flight. Choose "Select Specific Seats" and set it for your currently assigned seat. Sometimes this gives you an advance heads-up when your upgrade clears or when the airline changes your seat. You might need the paid version of expertflyer to use Select Specific Seats. I don't know if it's worth the cost just for seat alerts but the subscription is worth it to me for the inventory searches and alerts.
