Citi AAdvantage Executive Contactless Mastercard

Just got my usual yearly replacement for the Citi AA Exec card. since the numbers wear off so quickly. However, this one has the contactless symbol on the back (and is significantly heavier compared to my current card).

Hadn't seen anything posted here about this, but looks like they are finally catching up to the modern world.

Thanks for sharing. I may request a new card. I find the contactless card very helpful.

The Citi Platinum Select is being issued as a contactless card also.

I may have spoken too soon. So far it has not worked at two places I tried.... Shows invalid card. My Samsung watch worked fine so it wasn't their end..

I've found US-issued contactless cards to RARELY work anywhere. Just my experience.

I guess it depends. I received this contactless card before my last trip to the EU/UK, and indeed it didn't work well. However in these case the Chase Hyatt card was flawless throughout the EU/UK. Will try Australia soon.

Indeed, it does depend. I've had my AMEX not work at CVS in the States, but work flawlessly at FRA airport train station (requiring PIN input - which I guessed - apparently correctly - was my cash advance pin.) OTOH, that same card was not accepted in any way at the FRA HBF. Perhaps different charging authorities? - just airport to city. I also have a Chase contactless - not working even domestically either. Don't have the Citi version yet - but no high expectations.

P.S. - Enjoy Australia!!!

Interesting I've had my contactless cards work at CVS and other large nationwide retailers. It's seemingly becoming more and more accepted at least in California.

What a joke. Why bother putting out a contactless card if it doesn't work?

WiscAZ Jan 25, 2020 2:05 pm

When I saw OP post about this I ordered a replacement card. Pretty amazing that I ordered this at 4pm yesterday and it arrived in less than 24 hours. It does appear to be contactless but I have not tried it yet. Will report back as the Chase card that I use around here works great.

I haven't had a problem using this card in "contactless mode" in the US or EU. Do bear in mind that contactless has a limit - typically $100 in the US but it's lower in the UK and EU - GBP 30 and EUR 35 respectively.
It seems to me that in Europe, contactless cards are used more as a cash replacement than in the US: a few items in a grocery store, a round of drinks in a pub, morning coffee etc. Glad to see that the US is finally coming round to adopting it as retailers update their POS devices.

The first attempt was at a gas pump - so I suppose it's possible that it may try to exceed the limit, although the error was invalid card, not a decline message.
The second attempt was for a bag of chips and a drink... under $5.

I have the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the contactless worked for a little while and then just stopped. Then it started for a bit, then stopped.

Definitely seems to be touch and go across many cards.

I’m getting a new exec card in the mail tomorrow. It was compromised Thursday when someone bought a load of pet supplies at pet smart in Indianapolis. I use Apple Pay so the contactless to me for the card doesn’t mean much.

Tintin Jan 26, 2020 6:05 am

I was invited by Citi to try this contactless card in the last summer. Citi also offered me a $10 credit for charging a total of $10 in three stores from a list among which CVS, Target, etc. were included. My card works everywhere in the US (and I received the $10 credit by using it at CVS and Target and probably at Walgreens/DuaneRead or Rite Aid) where contactless cards are accepted. I haven't used it in overseas but will try it in London next week.

Note that, Citi added the contactless logo on the back. You need to tap/touch the logo at the contactless pad on the terminal. If it doesn't work, I would call the customer service. Perhaps your contactless payment ability hasn't been activated in the system.

I called in and was told that my account wasn't eligible yet, but a "third batch" was going to go live with contactless in the next month or so. <shrug>

perigord Jan 26, 2020 9:01 pm

New cards also seem heavier and sturdier than the old. Surprised that non-contactless are still being sent at this point.

Finally. The only card left in my wallet without contactless.

Herb687 Jan 27, 2020 5:23 pm

And plastic cards are no longer available even on request. Morons at Citi. Why are you forcing me to have a ridiculously heavy unwanted metal card that is going to pose an issue at airport security AND costs you much more to produce and mail?

Good on ya, Citi. You're pissing off customers AND driving costs UP for your business at the same time. I guess AA and Citi are made for each other!

Weird. I just called and spoke to a rep and she happily ordered me the new contactless card.

jtav559 Jan 29, 2020 6:53 pm

Did an online request for new cards to replace "damaged" existing ones, so same acct number.

Both Citi AA Exec and Citi Plat Select cards.

Ordered Saturday, showed up Tuesday.

Both new cards are contactless. Easy as pie.

bchandler02 Jan 30, 2020 7:21 am

So far this week the card has worked in contactless mode multiple times. Perhaps it just takes a bit to activate that side of it the first time.. who knows.
The real test will be in a week or so when I go back to the gas station where I originally tried it and got the invalid card message.

scolbath Jan 30, 2020 7:26 am

I wonder if this means there is any hope of them supporting Google Pay for these cards :-(

bchandler02 Feb 14, 2020 7:28 pm

Update: The card now works in contactless mode at the gas station where I originally tried it. Looks like it may just take a bit to activate that side of it the first time. I haven't had it fail once yet, at places that accept contactless.

Been through the WTMD multiple times with the new card. Zero problems. Your concerns are unwarranted.

I have a Citi Prestige contactless and it has worked like a charm in Europe. The first transaction was the one that didn’t go through at a Starbucks. Turns out it was the terminal of that particular shop, i have used it a couple of time and it has worked fine at Spain. My contactless Amex is also works fine where it is accepted. I have to ask a contactless version of my AA Plat.. , but so far the contactless Prestige i have received in November works great.

The new cards require one contact use before the contactless feature will work

Or so says the activation sticker on a replacement executive mastercard I received today that I had not requested. (My previous card was already contactless.)

dia1 Apr 28, 2020 1:06 pm

New card lacks the very useful virtual account number feature

I received a replacement Citi executive mastercard card today that I had not requested. The new card is in a different category (first 4 digits reveal this) and does not have the virtual account numbers feature. I called to ask/complain about this change and was told by a phone agent who spent some time researching the issue that all AA cards are being reissued and none will have that feature. This is very bad news! When I started using virtual numbers for my few recurring charges, I stopped having problems with my card being compromised.

enviroian Apr 28, 2020 1:21 pm

What do the first four digits mean? I agree I got my new card. I though all MC started 5466 but my new card’s first 4 aren’t this anymore.

I agree I don’t know why I got a replacement card as I didn’t ask for one either and already used it for Apple Pay. Pain in the arse now to change all my info.

The 1st 6 digits are simply the Bank Identification Number part of the number - it doesn't imply anything about features of the card in itself

Long Train Runnin Apr 28, 2020 5:17 pm

I called and requested a contactless card a few months ago when I realized this was an option.

Has worked great through out the limited places in the US that do contactless, and it worked great all over Europe where contactless way more common.

With no transaction fees and contactless it makes for a decent card for international.

I have received several lately, and they are working. Just the original ones I first had from what I now see.

Suggestions on destroying one of these?

I converted my Executive card to a MileUp card, which arrived this weekend. I was a bit surprised that I didn't receive an envelope in which to return the thick Executive card.

Any ideas on an easy way to destroy it?

A lot of cross-cut paper shredders will hapliy chew it up. Otherwise, cut it up, make sure to cut through the magnetic strip, chip & card numbers. For added safety, dispose of the pieces in several different garbage bags.

The exec cards have metal in them and cannot go through a shredder - it's a significant amount of metal and not just foil.
I think I asked Citi once and they said they have a place I could send it, but I didn't.

Take a knife and peel the sticker off both sides. You can then shred the sticker/strip/chip, and you'll also see the metal I am referring to. That's what I did last time - I should have taken pictures and posted here.

Yep. Card is a beast. I broke my scissors trying to cut it. You need the local FD to use the jaws of life to cut that in half.

That being said isn't it a completely moot point if the card is deactivated? What good is it to someone then.

Not necessarily. In many cases the replacement card has the exact same number, CID, and expiration date.
