So Qantas drops LAX-BNE which AA picks up and Qantas takes up ORD-BNE.

Seems like it would probably be an easier upgrade than LAX<->SYD, so probably good news for AA flyers if true.

Yes, if they drops BNE-LAX. My guess AA will takeover LAX-BNE.

For leisure travelers, who are likely counting on upgrades more so than business travelers, not a terrible place to enter OZ

Many people, including the management of Air Sydney (aka Qantas), do not seem to realise that many people do not live in Sydney or want to go Sydney

Perhaps I'm missing your point...

It seems that there are lots of connecting options to elsewhere in Australia from BNE, including Sydney, are there not?

As a leisure traveler (again, business travelers are generally less likely to be making decisions based on upgrade chances), if I wanted to fly LAX-Australia (or even to Sydney specifically) and my options were LAX-SYD with low chances of an upgrade or LAX-BNE with a higher chance of upgrade and then connecting, this would seem to be a positive development.
