No PDB due to FAA Supervisor being on board?
Just finished PEK-LAX-BOS-PHL-DFW 12/9 and 12/10 (Don't ask!) All in J/F.
On the last leg (at 11am), PAX in 1A asked for a Bloody Mary, and was told "I'm sorry sir, but there is a FAA supervisor on board. So we can't do alcohol until we are in the air." 1A says nicely, "I've never heard of something like that before. Is it a new rule?". Her response was, "It's always been a rule when the FAA is on board.". FA about 25 years old. 1A says to me that's some kind of <redacted by moderator> excuse for for just being Lazy.
Opinions?

Aren’t they supposed to NOT know if there is an FAA auditor onboard? Either way they technically just can’t do a PDB after the door closes I thought.

That just sounds like ..well crap
what difference does it make on who is on board..
after all, its not illegal to serve a PDB here in the states
(unlike some countries.... where it seems tax and local laws apply)

It goes without saying that if not serving PDBs due to the presence of an FAA inspector on board was actually a thing, there certainly are a heck of a lot of FAA supervisors flying on American aircraft these days....

She was correct in saying..."I'm sorry sir, but there is a FAA supervisor on board. So we can't do alcohol until we are in the air." She is
obviously not allowed to do alcohol on ground .... What she was saying is that if I can't have it, you can't have it either

Any excuse they can find to not do a PDB service they will. LAZY.
For example the other day only did an "express service" due the "short duration of the flight" but they had plenty of enough time not only to talk about the barclay card in full detail but make ANOTHER pitch when we were taxiing to the gate and a flight attendant stood there at the door handing out apps to disembarking passengers.

The sole question is whether local law permits the service of alcohol at that time under the terms of AA's local license. If that is the case, serving alcohol before the cabin door is closed, may be a violation of local law and thus FAA rules. I have no idea what Pennsylvania or Philadelphia rules are.
That said, it was foolish for the FA to tell a passenger that she was only complying with what she believed the law to be because she might be caught.
If you want to pursue it and believe that there is no local prohibition, complain to AA and FAA. FAA, of course, does not care about levels of customer service, but does get testy about being made into the "bad guy" when it is not.
