Interesting...I see this too. Looks like AA is testing out UA's purely dollars-based qualification option without raising the existing requirements (for now).
I imagine this will only increase the number of EXPs, though.

Well without changing anything else, it can only work to assist. Those that are spending $24,000 and not earning status by the other means are unlikely to be impacting on anyone , since I would think that they must be buying expensive tickets ( generally ) for their travel and likely have little benefit from status

*Admittedly, you can do it for less on partner airlines.

I see the days of earning or keep status with any airline , have become a maze .
Note to airlines: Just keep it simple, and stop all this changes/adjustments ,
AA , you do not need to follow... be the leader (wishful thinking on my part)

This is more of the airlines trying to find every nook and cranny of revenue. I suspect we will see more "creative" promotions in 2020.

100% $ based would work for me, so hoping this comes through.
I doubt it though, I rarely seem to be a target for promotions, I assume because of my ‘steady’ mid level status and my relatively high $ to status ratio. I’ll be PLAT this year with the $ of EXP.

I think that means if you opt-in for this promotion, you cannot renew status the old way using a combination of EQD and EQM/EQS. It's one or the other.

My app shows the version of this with the EXP bar set at $22K EQD.
I'm going to end 2019 at ~$21.7K so it's pretty close to a wash.
----
I'm not reading much into this yet. My guess is AA thought UA's new approach was going to attract some of the real high spenders away, wasn't prepared, and rushed out a promotional program.
