AA announces new "nerd bird" routes: AUS-BOS, AUS-SJC and "special event" city pairs

Double daily routes. Some of the first non-hub city pairs in a long, long time.

AA getting in the tech bird action with AUS-SJC and AUS-BOS. AA flew AUS-SJC until 2009, not sure if they ever flew AUS-BOS.

1996 called. It wants its press release back.

I guess this is what passes for innovation at AA these days: reinstating SJC routes with a long AA history and adding a few oddball flights here and there for special events (something UA has been doing for a while).

If AA brought back comfortable MD-80s to fly AUS-SJC that might be cool (though at its high water mark I believe AUS-SJC was up to 4x daily with 3 of those flights being operated by 757s).

I believe that other than RDU/LHR these might be the only Mainline non hub routes that operate on a regular basis (no seasonal or Saturdays).

This a fantastic news for us here in the Silicon Valley. Thanks AA for restoring this service.

Sure which they would reinstate LAX-PSP permanently. Used to have multiply daily N/S's. Miss that.

Competition on AUS-BOS is steadily increasing - with the AA flights, there will now be 2x AA, 2x B6, 1x WN, 1x DL each way on the weekdays.

The press release also contained this interesting little tidbit:

And, for a quick weekend beach escape from the capital of Texas, American will also introduce the only service from AUS to Los Cabos, Mexico (SJD) on Saturday and Sunday, starting May 9.

BOS is truly a bloodbath in terms of airlines battling it out. Great for BOS flyers. Funny, I remember when folks decried BOS fares and would go to MHT, PVD, and even BDL to avoid it. Now it seems BOS is drawing a lot of that traffic back.
