Larger aircraft in Charlotte ?
This article discusses future growth plans of AA, and briefly mentions larger aircraft for CLT starting in 2020.
It doesn't mention a source, nor specifics.

Anyone want to speculate what that could mean?
787 service to other domestic hubs
777 to Europe in the summer (don't know of any additional gate space in CLT that could handle 300 people)
A330 domestic service to....?
CLT seems to be a home for the old, stripped down A321. Can't imagine finally getting some nice mainline in there.
Or was this article just some generic reporting without any substance behind it?

I heard a couple few years ago that CLT was planning to extend runway(s) to allow planes for long haul flights, to and from Asia, to land and take off. I was never quite sure about the veracity of what I heard, nor the timing if true.

There has been continuous upgauging of aircraft in Charlotte from the old US days. Went from a mix of mainline 319/320/321 to more 321s as 321s got delivered on both the US and AA side.
Charlotte is gate limited and doesn't have that many wide body gates. There is also a long concourse of RJ gates. We'll likely continue seeing cr2s got to cr7s and cr9s. Going from a 50 seater to a 76 seater is a big bump on a percentage basis and doesn't take up more gate room. PSA has gotten a lot of addition Cr7s and Cr9s, and retired some Cr2s.
My guess is less exciting but bigger RJs.

Yes like above poster said, smaller RJs would be upgauged. Bigger RJ routes could be upgauged to A319. Current A319/320 routes can be slowly replaced with A321 and B738.
I don't see B789 nor B777 coming to CLT. But it could be that all 9 A333 could be based in CLT while PHL takes over A332 fleet.

I'm not sure what a 10k runway precludes as far as aircraft type.

There has been A330 service to Europe for many years (I'm thinking 15+ years?), well before even the HP-US merger. During the Europe off-season, those usually get deployed domestically and/or to the Caribbean, sometimes to CUN, etc.

One of the biggest restrictions for widebodies at CLT is going to be that, AFAIK, only the D gates are widebody capable.

Interestingly enough. will be on a wide body from CLT to LAS in February on an A333. Already bought up to the pointy end, so we could ride in style. In 20 years of flying out of my CLT home airport, I don't remember having wide body service to LAS!
