Same day change
 
AA has a restriction on SDC must be same routing nonstop vs connection. This reduces options. What difference does it make if seats are open why restrict changing say from a nonstop to a connection.

Because they make the rules, as totally ridiculous and parsimonious they may be. There are likely reasons related to extracting more money from affected passengers.
