AA #940 SCL-DFW 21-Oct-2019 - departed 7 hours early

https://www.aa.com/travelInformation...,21&ref=search

940 was scheduled to depart Santiago at 9:15pm local, but instead left at 2:05pm and is most of its way up to Dallas now.

Was this a result of the civil unrest in Santiago? The SCL flights have been going fine the last few days (typically delayed by an hour to arrive far enough after the city curfew). Were passengers notified? It appears 945 (DFW-SCL) is still going tonight.

Another oddity is FlightAware shows an very short flight duration for tomorrow
4 hrs 59 mins instead of 10 hours for other days

This may have something to do with it.

The unrest has prompted Chilean President Sebastian Piñera to declare a state of emergency. He has also issued a night-time curfew with soldiers and tanks patrolling the streets.

Yes this is due to the 8pm curfew. So they pushed up the 8:45 and 9:15 departures to MIA and DFW both.

There's some other contributing factor for AA's changes in schedule. All other US airlines are operating at normal schedule, as is LATAM (mostly). Additionally, passengers can use their BP as an exception to be out during curfew on their way to the airport, and flight crew can use their airline credentials, so the curfew doesn't necessarily mean people can't make it there.

There are also ground crew to consider. American has its own employees on the ground in Santiago. They need to safely transit home after the flights depart, but before curfew. And, in the case of 940 it needs to arrive in Dallas before customs and immigrations closes. Those are just the issues we can discern from outside AA. There are also numerous internal factors we have little or no real insight on: crew rest and scheduling implications. Maintenance schedule implications (945->940 Is a long layover and SCL has an AA maintenance facility.). Etc.

Note that 940 is scheduled to depart at 11am for at least the next few days.

Today’s #940 flew on the early schedule, 10:43am-6:30pm.

With the cessation of curfews starting last night and the cancellation of the State of Emergency as of midnight tonight, tomorrow’s #940 is scheduled for (as usual) 9:15pm-5:09am.
