Totally Sold out first class-way early (to merge upgrade chances)

I'm traveling later this month on a saturday evening from DFW to PDX as an EX and I have almost regularly found an upgrade seat because of saturday travel. But a recent check showed that all 16 seats are totally sold out/blocked/unavailable with still many seats remaining in coach including 10+ in MCE...

Can anyone suggest a reason for this not really competitive flight being sold out in F?

Yes, I've seen this a lot lately myself. Lots of upfares is my guess.

Is the flight actually sold out J0, or just the seatmap is 100% occupied up front?

Or sports (for less-popular-than-NFL sports, like MLS, that might not charter).

The aircraft scheduled to operate the flight has 16 broken first class seats and the mechanics, well, you know.

With the upfares being actively offered, it's very possible. Most everyone I know at this point is paying extra to upfare in lieu of using upgrades.

Could basically be said in response to any suggestion in this thread. Which makes it kind of a pointless thread.

When one books economy on AA, if they go back into their reservation to "Change/Modify" they are sometimes offered reduced F inventory. I just experienced this after booking TODAY. Bought an economy fare for $395 RT, full F was 1,100. When I went to Change/Modify, I could upgrade RT for ~$590. This was a DFW-LGA flight departing early on the outbound, and returning on a late-evening itin. This is a Friday-Sunday itinerary.
