Reduced Mileage Award - cannot change after 9/30?

I just booked a Reduced Mileage Award for travel in Oct and Nov (outbound and inbound, respectively). The agent noted at the end something about "change deadline is 9/30". She put me on hold to confirm with someone and came back affirming this - that a change (for example, route change only) after 9/30 would require mileage redeposit. I was not aware of it. I checked AA's page and it says:

Booking requirements

  • Awards may be booked effective August 1, 2019 – September 30, 2019
  • Awards are valid for travel August 1, 2019 – November 30, 2019
  • Awards must be claimed by September 30, 2019
  • Award travel must originate in the 48 contiguous United States

Can anyone clarify the rules for changing a RMA? Thanks.

Agents get confused about these all the time. Calling and asking beforehand is likely to only muddy the water...if you called and asked 10 times, 5 agents would probably say they can't be changed while the other 5 would say it's no problem.

As long as your original award is booked before the 9/30 deadline then I'm not aware of any restrictions on routing changes after that, which shouldn't require a full award redeposit and reissue etc. But admittedly I've never tried to change one.

At the very least, if a better routing opens up after 9/30, I'd try at least 2 or 3 times to change it before throwing in the towel.
