Protection for SWU J —> F Upgrade?

Have a flight LAX-HND on AA metal in paid J which I upgraded to F with an SWU.

If my connection to LAX is late or somehow my flight gets switched to a JAL flight, will my SWU upgrade be protected or will I be in J? None of the other flights to Tokyo have an F cabin so it’s a moot point for any other scenario.

Thanks!

Roll of dice because things are not like the old days but your Exp so could have luck in particular if you were able to move to your destination to co airport NRT

I doubt it. I had a SWU PE to J upgrade and when it went mx and got delayed AA refused to book me into J on other carriers and I had to fight to even get them to rebook on later flight on AA in J.

I think if the flight is cancelled you may be more protected,

Never had this issue. My SWU has always been protected, including being rebooked in full fare J.

Now F is tough, given the lack of F routes, so AA may be hard pressed to find a potential routing that makes sense to rebook on. But if available, AA should book you on it.

Policy is to protect in ticketed (upgraded) cabin, which in this case for OP is F. However, YMMV in finding available F space and getting an agent who is willing to correctly implement the policy. On the latter, you'd probably have better luck in the LAX FL than over the phone or elsewhere in the airport.

If it happens, I would ask for them to re-book you in First Class on the AA codeshare flight numbers. E.g. AA8407 LAX-NRT (operated by JL), not JL61, etc. They might even route you on CX (although that may push your luck). They also don't need to route you on a One World carrier. But I'd first try to get re-booked in F on an AA codeshare flight number.

Not necessary.

Not likely in the least.

For this purpose, they do.

I was told that if the flight was cancelled they would protect me but since it was technically only delayed (12+ hours) I was voluntarily moving so not protected.

On the one time this happened to me, they protected my Y-J SWU but told me I had to stay on AA metal and they couldn't book me in J on Cathay or JAL. They offered Y on Oneworld carriers or J on AA. Based on some of the other threads on this site, it sounds like it's a bit agent dependent. Technically, you should be protected in F but you might need to HUCA until you find one willing to help.

Thanks, everyone. Looks like the same plane I'm taking from MIA is going to HND (and same situation on the return), so barring MX, plane swap, or too many drinks in the lounge, I shouldn't have an issue.

The short connections kinda stink as I won't have much time for FFD.

If your upgrade was re-ticketed (this is key) you will be protected.

Thanks. How would I know that? I purchased the ticket online and before it was ticketed I called and applied SWUs.

It's not as simple as that, no.

I thought it was

a) reticketed (SWU) vs not (ie Op-up or 500 mile evips)
b) then protected if there is seats available on a JV partner

What else?
