My original flimsy plastic one appears to be 1/88; my "number" starts with a letter. If you go down the rabbit hole starting with bosman's link, it's a apparent that neither letter-initial nor digit-initial were oddities.

1988. I have F######. My original AA card is printed on thin plastic. I also had a 1992ish all numeric USAir card which was assigned a new alphanumeric account number after the HP merger.
I also have a 1986 CO/EA Onepass card which has a mag stripe and still swipes at united kiosks.

Mine starts BT followed by 5 numbers. Odd that I can remember that number perfectly but not my cell phone number.

I have one that looks just like that. I also have an older one from 1987 when I first joined.

My wife and I both have the old thin plastic cards as well with our names and AAdvantage number typed on a paper label stuck to the cards. Our AAdvantage numbers are in this format: A#A#### (A=Alpha).

I seem to recall the new US numbers issued with the HP merger were based on total miles the previous year, starting at 111****. Mine was 11230**. I know I had "US Airways Top 500 Flyer" on several of my monthly statements
