AA No Longer the World's Largest Airline by revenue or ASM

"Atlanta-based Delta became the world’s largest airline by revenue with $12.5 billion in operating revenues during the period"

"Chicago-based United became the world’s largest by capacity flying 73.2 million available seat miles (ASMs) in the quarter."

Aren't there a gazillion metrics to judge what is "biggest"?

By what measure was AA previously the world's largest airline?

Edit: I appreciate the new title.

You fit more potato chips in AA's planes than any other fleet.

Maybe by number of aircraft? The US big three keep leapfrogging each other when one merges with another airline. AA became the largest when it took over TWA. Delta got Northwest. United merged with Continental. AA acquired US Airways.

There are several metrics that can be used. Review this URL quickly, before someone edits it to reflect these most recent changes.

"Worlds largest airlines"

There’s also the total passengers carried metric....It’s used often to measure this as well.

Both have been neck and neck with revenues for awhile. However, basically with near same revenues DL has well more than double operating profit/margins. Remember operating profits exclude debt service. I've come to the conclusion that Parker and team don't give a damn about airline KPIs. What they care is not that you reach your destination on time but that you filled out a Barclay's credit card application inflight and handed it to a FA for expedited handling.

Doesn't really surprise me. With AA's recent operational challenges, capacity reductions tied to the MAX grounding and all-around lousy service one can understand why the competition is surpassing them. I flew UA today for the first time in months and it was honestly a better experience than AA and...gasp...we actually departed on-time, something AA struggles with these days.

Isn't that mainly driven by the 737Max problem ?
