The cancel button on AA's website

My upcoming trip has a "cancel" button at AA's website even though it is beyond the 24 hour window.

If I actually went through with the button, what would it do? Would it give me flight credit back beyond the "change fees?"

The site is confusing to me as it would make you think I'm still in the 24 hour window that ended several days ago.

Thank you so much!

If you hit cancel, then proceed through all the steps and confirmation, the trip will cancel.

Whether you receive any credit will depend on the Fare Rules for the trip.

read the fine print and good luck!

The cancel button cancels your itinerary...you can do this anytime from the time you book the trip until you've flown the last flight. Nothing confusing about it.

If you cancel within the 24 hr window then you'll be automatically refunded. If you cancel outside of the 24 hr window, nothing will be refunded automatically. You'll need to call AA (or use prefunds.aa.com) to process any refund or book new flights using any remaining credit.

When you do cancel online like this, AA sends you a handy cancellation email that lists your PNR and ticket number, which is needed when you call AA to rebook using any value left on the ticket.

To be clear, the cancel button cancels your ticket, not just the itinerary.

That has nothing to do with the question of whether there is a refund, a credit, or nothing (in the case of a ticket costing less than the change fee or which is fully inflexible).

Not exactly. I had to cancel an award ticket within 24 hours just last month. I had to call to get the miles and $$ refunded. It was a bad day at AA. Waited about 2 hours for AA to call back. I am a plt BTW. This is the first time I had ever canceled an AA ticket online (because of the long phone wait). Did not save me any time just confusion. That cancel button is an efficient one. On United.com, it is a two step process. Click cancel and you are presented with a confirmation about cancellation, how the miles/money will be refunded and the final cancel button. On AA there was no confirmation to cancel. Click that button and it was done. The notice about call AA to get refund happens after it is all over. Took me by surprise.

Yep, award tickets are a different animal, you always have to call to have the miles and taxes/fees refunded.
