I am running into an issue I have never had before on American. I am trying to check in for my flight from SEA - LAX - OGG set for tomorrow morning and it is not letting me check in online. I go through the entire process and I end up getting and error saying I need to check in at the airport. My ticket is a standard economy ticket (not basic) and we are not checking any bags. I am not sure why it is not letting me check in online.
I would prefer to check-in ahead of time as my flight leaves at 5:55am and I really don't want to deal with getting to the airport earlier than normal to stand in line at the checkin counter.

I just select the TSA line with the cute looking male agent, while wearing my Disneyland Gay Days shirt. The two times this has occurred has always left me feeling that I did not get a happy ending from my select TSA agent.

I have never ever had SSSS on a domestic flight, and I've been on roughly 300 so far. #themoreyouknow
It can't hurt to call and make sure your ticket is in order. If the name/DOB doesn't match precheck number of FF number that's one of the only things I can think of, short of something worse like a ticketing error.

Its a random process and it can happen to anyone.

If it is SSSS ....Separate yourself from your traveling companion in line so you appear to be alone. Then have your have your traveling companion carry your carry on through security. Go through with a magazine or something that take minimal time to inspect.

I was prevented from checking in online on a CUN-LAX flight when I was SSSS. I don't recall getting an extra patdown but I did get pulled aside before boarding and they went into my bags and asked me a few questions before letting me on.

I haven't really had the desire to experiment with the other team previously, so I kind of consider it my experimental phase, however short it may be, the two times I've had SSSS. To paraphrase a Seinfeld episode, it didn't move (on it's own - I was lightly molested with the back of the agents hand), so I am assuming I can confirm which team I'm on (all said in jest, if offended let me know will remove).

Another couple of possible explanation for the unable to check in online issue -- I've occasionally had a flight stuck in the ticketing queue and I sometimes book on DL through a travel portal which for some reasons mixes my name up when communicating with DL. I have to go to the agent to check in to get them to fix it.
As for the SSSS, on my last occasion, I was pulled out at checkin in Europe when check-in saw I was flagged and intensively questioned regarding where I had been, what I had seen, details about that, restaurants I had eaten at, what I had ordered, then went to the gate, where I was again patted down, wanded, and questioned on similar random things. I'm presuming these folks had recently been to profiling school, thankfully I had my cover story down

I got into this issue about a month ago for a domestic trip. The reason given to me was changes to my itinerary (one leg due to the 737 cancellation and one leg due to plane tardiness which resulted in a new flight rebooked).
These changes somehow caused a glitch in the re-issuing of my ticket (and caused the error message when I tried to check-in on-line. A call with the EXP desk solved the problem.
So if OP has had changes to his itinerary, this could be a reason for his problem.
