Make sure you download the AA app if you don't already have it. If a flight is oversold they may show that they are looking for volunteers around 24 hours prior.
We had that scenario recently and knowing 24 hours prior gave us time to explore possible alternative flights. That way if any routing they offered was unattractive, we could see if they could accommodate us on a flight that worked better for us. But even if they show on the app that they are looking for volunteers, they may not end up using any.
