Don't let your AAdvantage elite status expire--Any downside?

I left my fly-every-week job last summer, and as a result am at lowly Gold now. I got an email from American last week basically giving me back my PPRO status until May and can keep it going forward if I get 20,000 EQMs. Normally I'd ignore it since I'm not doing much flying, but I have a last-minute trip this week so I signed up for it. I got my free MCE and everything, so I'm happy.
There's no downside in doing this, right? It sounds like I basically get free PPRO for three months, which for me is probably this one RT.

What does the email says if you dont complete the 20k miles? If nothing mentioned, then no. The only possible thing might be not getting a similar offer in the future.

Everything? To me, everything would be the free upgrades are eligible for, not just MCE

20K EQMs isn't too hard to get, so if you can justify some trips/mileage runs, to keep PPRO for another year then go for it. AA has been a lot less generous to others seeking a soft landing. This is the first I've heard of them making an offer to keep a high level status like PPRO. Maybe this indicates the higher ranks have thinned for this year....
