I wonder if it was a security call disguised as a customer service call. Has OP missed any other connections recently?

It happened to me 3 times (all checking if I am still taking the flight)

LAX-SFO-JFK, separate ticket, both on AA. LAX-SFO was delayed and SFO GA called me as I was puling into SFO's gate
LAX-LHR - received a call about 30 minutes before departure on a lightly loaded flight
HKG-LAX - received a call about 30 minutes before flight

First, I haven't horrible experiences with AA, EXCEPT for the previous night., but that ended as huge positive experience. I was on a E140 /145 into DFW, so my bag had to be gate checked for pick up on the jet bridge. I was first in line on the jet bridge and had a view out the window down to the unloading area of the trolley of bags. I had 12 minutes to get from A30 to D29A, that's gate arrival time. I sat there and watched as the ramp worker grabbed every bag but mine. The handler looked at me in the eyes at least 6-7 times as she grabbed the bag in front of mine, behind mine, above mine, and below mine. I was not polite in my language up on the jet bridge as my bag ended up being last as i desperately needed to get to my gate. (As a side note, I got to my gate at T-2 and the gate agent was standing there, "you must be Mr. ****, welcome aboard.) What I truly want to believe is that I have the highest "Eagles" score ever recorded. That they will hold all flights for me until it is confirmed via personal phone call that i can't make it.That sounds like best airline ever.. So go figure.

Yes ... once, at least that’s what the nice gate mgr told me and shown me on his phone he tried to reach me on my mobile phone and home phone etc ... couldn’t reach me (that’s because those numbers are non US ... anyway strange) ... once I got to the airport, I heard they were paging me to board. They were super nice once I was at the gate, escorted me to my seat, told me glad that I made it and wished me a pleasant flight and door closed right after. I was taking my time since I got aa email informing the flight was delayed for over an hour but apparently they decided to leave earlier. It was a transatlantic flight to ZRH No, I’m not CK, just EP.

This has happened to me once. Gate agent at LHR called to see if I was going to make it onto the RDU flight. Unfortunately I was already home so the call woke me up early in the morning (long IRROPS with multiple rebookings and ended up taking another airline).

Edited to add: this was a number of years ago, but I still remember being impressed that they would make an international phone call to check if I was going to make it.

They called me once regarding a segment I had completely forgotten about (long story, only needed one segment due to a change in plans caused by a funeral, return was booked so far in advance it slipped my mind). I didn’t recognize the number so I ignored it. They left a very nice voicemail and I remember thinking that was some pretty good customer service, especially for a lowly Plat (although it was a J booking so that likely explains it).

I didn't call, but I definitely checked AA.com to ensure that they did. I'm always borderline on re-qualification, so I check every time.

In over 600 AA segments, this has happened to me exactly one time, at CLE of all places.
I usually board last when I don't care about overhead bin space. I was in the PP lounge at CLE enjoying a beer and walked over to the gate about 20 minutes before departure. As I was walking, the GA called me to ask if I was going to make the flight. I said I was two gates away, and then they closed the doors behind me as I boarded - turns out they were trying to close the flight early as it was a light load. ^
I wish this were the rule, rather than the exception

I haven’t had a true complaint about AA customer service since.

(Side note, I also live in SE WI and use ORD as my primary departure.)
I accidentally left my iPad in the seatback of my first flight but very fortunately I had kept my boarding pass between the case and screen of the iPad. While I was sitting on my 2nd flight waiting for everyone to finish boarding, I had an AA rep bring my iPad to me on the plane. I completely forgot leaving it on my first flight but was shocked that they found it and then actually walked it over to me on my 2nd flight. Major props to AA on that one.
