How does this work - Missed connection

I am scheduled on a flight from Miami to Quito AA leaving Miami at 4:46PM

I would like to book a flight on AA Tampa to Miami to arrive at 2:03 PM. (Have to pick up luggage there)

If the Tampa Miami flight was delayed, and I missed the 4:46 flight, there is another one on AA at 7:45PM which I know I'd be on standby for. However, if I didn't get on this flight, what would happen to me then? Would they let me take a flight the next day?

The only other earlier flight from Tampa to Miami gets in at around 8AM, so I'd have to sit at the airport until 4:46!

American has a policy of treating separate tickets as if they were thru-ticketed, meaning they will put you on the next available flight (whether same day or not)

American has a very good policy of honoring separate tickets as if they were connections and putting you on the next flight with availability. Of course, that could be a problem during high demand times, and could cause havoc with someone traveling to UIO to fly to GPS or SCY to catch their boat excursion in the Galāpagos.

You are correct in that, regardless of how AA treats separate ticketing honoring them as a connection, AA will not through-check baggage.

AA has flights from TPA-MIA every couple of hours, I find it hard to believe they are all sold out unless it's in the very near future?
